Watari cares more about the ideal of L (the world's greatest detective) more than he did about L the person. L knew this, and honestly, it really hurt that not even his caretaker cared about all that much. This is why he didn't want to meet his successors.
Another sad headcanon, because why not? I love sad headcanons. I still support the idea that Watari and L have a father-son like relationship though.
