I could smell it from the kitchen. The scent of mother's pumpkin pie, fall was here. I crept out of my room and down the dark hallway. I could barely see, stupid breaker must have blown again. This happens a lot.

I trudge back for my phone. My dug, Sal stays behind me nearly pressed up to my legs. He makes small growls over something that I can't see.

I unlock my phone and turn the flashlight on. I creep down the hall as I peer over the stairway railing I see a light on in the kitchen. It's dim and flickering.

I step sideways on the stairs so they won't creak. I feel my heart already racing, the smell of pie was stronger now. Almost like a drug. My mouth watered at the thought of getting a bit on the other hand my stomach feels like it's in knots. Sal acting scared isn't helping. I grip my phone tighter, my hands get sweaty. They slip and presses a button, Google Assistant pops up,

"Ready to help,  Mar-"

I shut it off quickly. I hear the floorboards creak. She doesn't come out.  I enter the kitchen trying to not make a sound. I cover up the light with my finger. Even though I already know I've been caught.

I see mama bent grabbing the pie out of the oven. She turns around smiling, "You want pie, mouse?"

I felt a few tears roll down my cheeks, "Mama,"

Mama holds a slice of pumpkin pie up on a plate,  "You need to eat."

"Why won't you stay buried." I wept,

Mama smiles and sits me down,  "Come on and eat." She pinches my cheek with her cold fingers and eases a forkful into my mouth, "My little mouse."

I love mama and I love her pumpkin pies. I just wished the dead stayed dead here.
