Chapter 2: The Vulture Woman

One thing that Naruto noticed about Percy as the class progressed was that none of the people at Yancy Academy, students or faculty, seemed to treat him well. They were not receptive of his issues with dyslexia and ADHD, even though Yancy was supposedly an academy for troubled children.

This was especially true when it came to the mathematics teacher, Mrs. Dodds, who would be unnecessarily harsh with Percy. It seemed that this was the reason behind all the resentment that Naruto sensed from Percy. Percy's only friend in the school seemed to be Grover, who smelled like a goat to Naruto's sharp, foxlike sense of smell.

Naruto was no fool. He could easily tell that Grover was no ordinary human, and neither was Mrs. Dodds. Grover had a distinct presence that was reminiscent of Wood Release Chakra. Similarly, Mrs. Dodds smelled like a scavenging bird, which Naruto gleaned from the sulfurous and metallic odors of rancid meat that she exuded.

Though Naruto was being subtle in making his observations, he was so engrossed that he forgot to interact with his classmates. After Mrs. Dodds' mathematics class, in which she solved some linear equations for the class, Percy turned to Naruto. "Hello Naruto, my name is Percy. You don't have to be shy about speaking with me, even though you're new here. Would you like to be my friend?", Percy asked.

Noticing his mistake, Naruto quickly fabricated an excuse. "Apologies, Percy, I am not sure how good I am with English yet, as I grew up in a Japanese background. I wanted to get used to this environment first. I can be your friend.", Naruto said, hoping that the war that Hades spoke of was dealt with quickly. He didn't want to be Percy's friend for too long and end up growing too close to him. He had nothing against Percy, but he did not want to end up outliving another friend.

Percy sighed in relief, seeing that Naruto was not a jerk. "Seriously dude? Your English is better than most of the people in this class! Possibly myself included!", Percy exclaimed. Naruto smiled at him. "Thank you, Percy.", he said.

"Oh, boo hoo. What a cheesy way to talk.", said the annoying voice of one Nancy Bobofit. "Yo Naruto, why don't you ditch the loser and come with me. I heard the band room is free for a hot make-out session.", Nancy said, giving Naruto a coy smile. Percy could not believe the indecency of this girl. He turned to Naruto to see what He would say, but he was surprised that Naruto had not even reacted.

"You're not worth my time. From what I have seen so far, Percy is far better and friendlier than an insecure, foul-mouthed, and degrading bitch like you.", Naruto said in an even tone, causing the class to chant out "OH! ROASTED!". Nancy was red in the face after hearing Naruto's words to her. "Shitty asshole! I will teach you a lesson!", she screeched as she threw the bits of chalk she had in her hands at Naruto.
