He felt empty.
His shelves were filled with his achievements, but what he
once considered to be the trophies of his success, subtly
grew into the relics of his spite: embittering his heart,
corroding his spirit, decaying his thoughts. They didn't
mean anything more to him now than as the scorns of
betrayal he viewed them as.
Driven for years by his ambition, he believed success was
all that he needed to be content and feel whole - to become
the man he envisioned he could be. If he could do enough,
work hard enough, win enough, he would find success and
success would make him king.
