In 1987, Charles Xavier announced publicly his status as a mutant, inspiring others to stop hiding their abilities from the rest of the world
A year later, Dr. Moira MacTaggert approached Xavier with the idea of housing mutants from around the world in an effort to both educate them and provide shelter
The man was fascinated by the idea and repurposed his own house to serve as a school
Aided by Xavier's friends, Dr. Karl Lykos, and Raven Darkholme they would spend the next year preparing the mansion, and the other nine years looking for mutants
