Watching Finnick get reaped for the games was hard. Wondering if you'd ever get to see him again was even harder.

You and Finnick had been best friends since you were 7, and he had helped you make your own nets to catch fish for your family.

You'd never watched the games before, since you'd always hated how they took innocent children's lives, but this year you felt you had to watch. You had to see how Finnick was doing. You watched the games everyday on your tv at home, until there were only two tributes left: Finnick and a boy from district 2.

You knew tributes from district 2 tended to be brutal, training practically all their lives for the games, so you were worried about Finnick.

You watched nervously as the two fought on a cliffside, holding your breath every time Finnick got too close to the edge.

One wrong step, and he could go tumbling down the side. In the end, though, it was the boy from 12 who fell. You saw how it happened, saw the step he made on a wet piece of ground, saw how he slipped and fell, tumbling down the cliffside and splashing into the water below.

The final gong went off, and the game keeper announced that Finnick was the winner of the games.

You were happy that Finnick had won, though it made you sick to feel that way because of all the children that had died so that he could win.

Once Finnick got back into District 4, he was taken to the Victor's Village with his family. After the Peacekeepers left, you went to visit him in his new home.

You knocked on the door and it opened almost immediately, revealing Finnick standing there.

"Hey," you said.

"Hey, Y/N."

"How're you doing?" You hated how awkward you felt, but you didn't know how to react around him right now, didn't know how he was feeling after being in the games, after having to take the lives of children.

He chuckled, a dry, sardonic sound that was unlike him. "Couldn't be better," he said with sarcasm in his tone.

"I'm sorry," you said.

"For what?"

"That you got reaped for the games."

"It wasn't you that put me in there, Y/N."

"I know, but...but still."

"It's okay."

"I'm glad you're okay."

"Okay's a relative term."

"I didn't me-"

"It's okay, I know what you meant."

You didn't know how to make him feel better, how do you make someone feel better after they've seen lives taken in front of them? You just knew you had to do something to try to comfort him.

You went over to him and wrapped your arms around him, holding him close.

You felt his body start to shake and realized he was crying. You held him the sky grew dark outside and his tears had subsided.

"Thank you," he said finally.

"I love you," You said back.

You'd said I love you many times before, but the words seemed to hold more meaning now that you'd both been through something so difficult.

"I love you too."

You stayed with him that night, sleeping on a bed in one of the guest rooms, waking up multiple times through the night to the sound of Finnick having a nightmare and having to go comfort him. You didn't mind, though. You promised yourself you would always be there for him, and you meant to keep that promise.
