Two Weeks Later
"Yes, babe please bring me lunch to the office if you can. I don't think I'm going to be able to step away. The office is swamped today" I said saving a file on my laptop.
Today was one of those days I felt like plucking my hair from my eyelashes. The firm has been busy the past couple of days due to a public figure requesting that our firm represent them in their trial. Everyone has been on edge including myself. Not to mention I didn't have Adrian here today to loosen me up in more ways than one. Luckily for him, he requested this day off since today is his mother's birthday. He was going to spend most of the day with her and I would officially be meeting her later tonight at her birthday party.
"I don't think my mom would mind me sneaking off for an hour. She's too busy running up my card. Talkin' about I owe her all this since she had to do it for me" He huffed causing me to laugh
"It's her special day so treat her like the queen she is Murphy" I teased
Hearing a knock on my door I looked up from my laptop. Melanie entered my office, I was about to greet her when the expression on her face made me swallow my words. As she sat down before me she placed her index and pinky up to her ear as if she was on the phone.
"I am, but it's Adrian. Matter of fact babe can I call you back. I think Mel needs to tell me something important" I said keeping my gaze on Melanie
"Gon' head baby. I got to stop this woman before she make a nigga go broke" Adrian said
Ending the call I removed my AirPods from my ears and stored them into the charging case. Melanie was starting to make me worried. She was always her lively self in the office but at this moment she was serious. Closing my laptop I cleared my throat, anxious to hear what she had to tell me.
"What's going on Mel ? You're making me nervous right now" I said chuckling nervously
"It's taking everything in me not to go the fuck off on these white people in here" Melanie said as her leg bounced up and down "They fucking fired me" She said her face flushed red
"I know you're lying" I said standing to my feet. Walking around my desk I set beside her "Why did they fire you ?"
"For protecting you. I don't know who told them but they found out about you and Adrian. They had called me to the office and asked was it true. I told them it wasn't but they didn't believe me. Talking about it was my job to report yall"
My mouth dropped open hearing the news of them firing Melanie because of Adrian and I's relationship. Sighing heavily I felt like a terrible friend for even getting her into this mess. Leaning over the arm of the leather armchair I gave Melanie a hug.
"Mel I'm so sorry for getting you into this mess. I'm going to go talk to them" I said rubbing her back
As Melanie hugged me back she shook her head. "Girl it's not your fault at all. You're my best friend what the fuck do I look like snitching on you. Plus I only stayed here for you" Melanie chuckled softly as our embrace ended "But they do want to talk to you Vix, they're in the conference room. I think they're letting you go too"
"I wouldn't be surprised if they are. I was hoping this wouldn't happen but.." I said shrugging my shoulders "Take your time clearing out your desk, we can leave out together because if they don't fire me I'm going to quit"
