"Mother," I breathe, coming face to face with her for the first time after my birth.
She looks me up and down, studying my every movement, making me uncomfortable. I clear my throat to distract her from her thoughts. Her eyes flicker up to meet mine for a brief moment, before they go back to studying my body. She hasn't noticed Vincenzo yet.
She sighs.
"I knew that you'd find me one day, I just didn't expect it to be so soon."
Her accent is much thicker than I expected. My father was Spanish, whereas my mother's voice makes it clear that she's American.
"I'm 2o," I state simply.
"Wow, it's been that long already?" She mutters, mostly to herself.
I look up from the ground to her eyes, but she's already staring at me. My eyes flicker to Vincenzo, and hers follow.
"YOU." She practically yells when she sees him.
Vincenzo visibly cringes. My mother turns back to me.
"How DARE you fraternise with the... enemy!" She spits in my face.
"How dare I?! How dare YOU leave my father and I all those years ago! How dare you refer to MY BOYFRIEND as 'the enemy'!" I mock her accent.
She looks shocked with my response.
"You've got my feistiness," she says.
"Don't ever compare me to you. We're nothing alike. You're an evil monster who broke my father's heart, who's part of the American Syndicate and who started a damn war!" I scream.
She laughs.
"We're more alike than you realise, Emma. Is that what he told you?" She gestures to Vincenzo, "that I started the war? No, no, no! It was all them, my dear."
I cringe when she calls me 'dear'.
"She's lying! Don't believe her!" Vincenzo frantically whispers in my ear.
"Don't worry. I'm on your side. Always," I whisper back, smiling.
My mother starts glaring daggers at me.
"I need answers," I state.
She laughs again, but this time it's more maniacal. She cackles. In my face.
"Honey, you're in no place to demand things."
She can obviously see the puzzlement on my face as she says, "This is my home. Do you really think that I wouldn't have any protection?"
I realise what she means.
She means that we're trapped here.
