April 5, 2005

You sat in class, watching the clock slowly tick by. Painfully slow. Sitting in a classroom, sitting in one spot, doing work in complete silence was never your thing. School was always something you completely dreaded. People were assholes, teachers were never much better. When everyone left the classroom to go to lunch, you went to an empty classroom and opened the window.

You threw your backpack down and climbed out. You started walking through the yard until you hear a deep voice beaming.

"Where do you think you're going?!"

You turn around and see one of the school policemen looking at you.

"Oh shit."

You start running, heading for the road. He catches up to you and grabs your arm.

"Hey let go of me!" You yelled.

"I don't know where the hell you think you're going! Get back inside let's go!"

He pulls you back inside by the arm and brings you to the office.

"Sit." He said, gritting his teeth. You huff and sit down, looking at your nails. The principal comes out of his office and motions for you to come inside. You roll your eyes and follow him in. You didn't think you were "better" or "cooler" you just couldn't handle school anymore. You sit in front of him and he crosses his arms.

"Fifth time this year, y/n?" He asks cocking an eyebrow.

"Sixth." You mumble. He rolls his eyes and picks up the phone. He dials a number and waits as the phone rings. He rolls her eyes once again as no one picks up.

"Just call my brother. My moms probably working... so is my dad." You say quietly. He huffs and dials your brother's number. He already knew it by heart. Your brother Clyde was a police officer but was always easy on you no matter what you did.

"Yes hello Clyde? ...Yes it's principle Howard. ....Yup out the window again." He says making eye contact with you. "Alright. See you soon...."

He puts down the phone, harder than necessary and folds her hands.

"You are a lost cause y/n." He states blandly. You look down and chew on your cheek. "Your brothers on his way. Wait here." He says as he gets up and walks out. You sat waiting for a few minutes until he opened the door with Clyde behind him. You huff as you get up and he places a hand on your shoulder, bringing you outside to his car. You sit in the front and look out the window.

"Seriously y/n? Again? This shit has to stop. Mom's gonna flip."

"Well she's a little too busy at work. She can't even answer the phone." You reply, continuing to look out the window. He shakes his head and starts driving. He suddenly gets a call on his mic of his police car.

"Officer Tyler come in." The voice says.

"Officer Tyler." He says as he reaches for the mic and talks into it.

"Yeah we got a report of a trespasser on 25 bunker rd. Neighbors said there's just a girl walking around in some empty pool? Could you check it out?"

"I'm not even on duty. I got my little sister in the car." Clyde replied, annoyed.

"Clyde, you're patrolman. She's not dangerous or anything just go please." Clyde rolls his eyes and looks over to you.

"I'll be fine." You say.

"Get in the back." He tells you as you smile. You liked going with your brother when he has to pick you up from school. As much as you didn't like cops, and thought his job was boring, you looked up to him and just liked to spend time with him.
It was a small town. The only "crime" is how fucking boring it was.

You climb over the middle consul and get in the back seat. He pulls up to a small house that says for sale. You recognize it from your bike rides. You passed it almost everyday. No one had lived there for a while.

"Stay. Here." He orders as he gets out of the car. You sit back and wait for a few minutes. You suddenly hear someone yell and then a faint laugh. You get out of the car and run to the backyard.

You make eye contact with a very beautiful girl, standing at the bottom of an empty swimming pool. She has dark hair and was wearing a long dress with a jean jacket, high boots and fishnet tights. She smiles at you, causing Clyde to turn around and groan.

"Y/n I told you to stay in the car."

"I heard yelling." You shrugged.

"She your sister?" The girl asks.

"Yeah. I'm y/n." You respond. The girl smiles and walks closer to the edge of the inside of the empty pool.

"Hey stay where you are!" Clyde yells. The girl throws her hands up and pouts.

"What? Are you gonna shoot me, officer?"

"Merrill I'm sorry but this isn't your house anymore. Your aunt sold it. It doesn't belong to you."

Merrill. Pretty.

"Come on Merrill, you're not in trouble. I'll bring you to your aunts." Clyde says patiently. Merrill looks back to you and goes to the stairs of the pool. She comes out and walks to Clyde. She brushes her finger over his gold badge.

"You don't really look like a cop." She smirks, wobbling her head.

"Come on lets go." He responded, grasping her arm. "Let's go y/n." You all walk back to the car and Merrill gets in the front. You sit in the back as Clyde gets into the drivers seat. She turns around and you look up at her.

"Shouldn't you be in school?" She asks.

"Merrill turn around." Clyde orders. She rolls her eyes before she turns back around and huffs.

"Yeah I got caught sneaking out the window." You say. Clyde closes his eyes in annoyance and pinches in between his eyebrows as he continues driving.

"y/n-" He starts to speak before Merrill cuts him off.

"The window?" She laughs. You giggle a little too and reply, "Yeah. It's never worked." Merrill bites her lip and turns back around to face you. The car stops and as she's about to say something, you hear a high pitched voice call her name.

"Merrill?!"

Merrill quickly looks and sees a woman running out of her house to the car. Clyde gets out and you look confused. Merrill gets out as well and the woman runs to her. She wraps her arms around her neck and Merrill didn't seem to have much of a reaction.

"Merrill it's been so long. What happened to you?" The woman asked, cupping her cheeks. Merrill moves her hands away and looks deep into her eyes.

"Hi aunt Shellie."

"Merrill I'm so sorry about the house- I- I thought you were gone I-"

"Don't." Merrill mumbles as she pushes past her and goes into the house, shooting you one last glance. Clyde talks to Shellie for a minute and you look up to see Merrill watching you through her window. She walks away once she sees you and you stare forward. Clyde gets back in the car and drives home.

You take your bag and walk into the house where your mother, Julia stops you at the door to the hallway.

"And where do you think you're going?"

"My room?" You replied trying to get past her but she stops you once again.

"Seriously y/n? The sixth time?! I can't keep doing this shit!" She yells.

"I'm sorry I don't want to be there! I hate it there!" You yelled with tears forming in your eyes.

"Well we all have to do hard things sometimes,  y/n." You roll your eyes and run to your room, slamming the door. Julia looks to Clyde who shrugs.

"Dinners in five." She tells you through the door.

"I'm not hungry!" You scream back. You sit on your bed and you stuff your face into your pillow. You eventually fall asleep in the dark room without dinner. That's not what you were thinking about though. Not at all. She was all you could think about.

Merrill.
