In the phone booth outside the convenience store, I sucked on a lollipop with the telephone cord twisted around my finger. Dallas was downtown at some dude's house doing business. I suspected whatever he was doing involved smoking a bowl and dipping into his own stash.
I had dropped off my application for early admission college at the post office. I hoped and prayed to get accessed into my dream school. It would be a one way ticket to financial freedom if I got a job out of it, and a passport out of this hell hole town.
Dallas must've heard me with the lollipop, because he just had to comment on it, "What else do you wanna suck on?" he hinted devilishly. I could see it now, him leaning against his car and smugly staring down at his crotch.
I rolled my eyes at him, sticking the lollipop into a small trash can at the bottom of the booth. I was thinking about the lack of drama in my life at the moment, it made me nervous as if there was something just around the corner waiting for me... something big.
Dallas brings me back to earth, "Jade, you there?" he raised into the receiver.
"I'm here. I'm here." I repeated, trying to remember what he had previously asked me then I did in fact remember, "I will suck..."
Someone hammered their fist into the booth door, and distracted me from the question, "Hurry up in there!" they spat. I thought I heard a familiar voice, and lowered the phone.
I kicked the door open and heard Evie giggling at me, "Jesus, the look on your face!" she engulfed in laughter. I turned back to Dallas, and told him I had to go before hanging up on him.
"Listen, I've got some customers for you. There over at the bridge, even said they'd pay a pretty penny for whatever you've got." she danced in place, eager for me to take the opportunity, "I'll show you if you give me 25% the cut."
I thought over it for a moment, I did need the money, and I was addicted to the rush of broad daylight sales, "Why not!?" I shrugged, following Evie towards the bridge.
As we walked over there, I began thinking about how great it was to have a friend who was a girl for once. I got tired of wrestling boys around the house and making sure they didn't have muck all over their faces.
Evie was a handful but it wasn't like I had to look after her. She was so strong willed that sometimes I wondered if she was the one taking care of me.
She sees me watching her in the corner of her eye and gives me a weird look, "What're you staring at, Jade?" she whined with a raised eyebrow, "Have I got something on me?"
"No." I smiled, piercing my lips.
We made it to the bridge, and I didn't see anyone. I look at Evie worryingly, and she nudges towards beneath the bridge.
"I never said they were good people." she laughed, heading down the embankment. I followed her, sliding down the dirt as the rocks trickled at my ankles.
She is stopped beneath the bridge now. It was dim down there with graffiti smothered walls and rubbish all over the place. I swear I even saw a needle and cr*ck pipe. There was a lump in my throat when nobody was down here either. I wondered why Evie wasn't speaking, and then I saw Lynn, Sandy and Lisa coming down as well.
Before I could run they surrounded me, and Evie wandered over to the side. I was shocked. She had set me up. Our friendship had been a total lie and I should've seen it coming. This was what I got for continuously keeping my guard down.
