I ducked below beams as I stepped into the construction site looking for Darry, there were so many men that I couldn't tell who he was. From above I heard Cort's voice, and glanced up to see him standing high above me, "Oh for god's sake." I blared. He wasn't who I wanted to see now.
Cort climbed down from the rooftop and jumped into a cloud of dust that formed at his feet. He looked me over with a concerned expression, "Woah Jade. You look like hell." he uttered.
"No sh*t." I angrily snapped. I would've asked why he was here, but I chalked it up to needing money. I just wasn't in the mood to deal with him or anyone else. I needed to find Darry and go the hell home.
He licked his lips and wiped the copious amount of sweat from his forehead. My face softened when I looked at him up close. I hated men. "What the hell happened, anyhow?" he breathed roughly, as we went over to the shaded area under a tree.
I caressed the tender spot under my breast, it rivalled in pain, "I think I broke a rib." I shortened a laugh, although it was more serious than funny, the situation was indeed laughable.
Cort came closer, "Let me see." he said.
His arm came towards me. I slapped it away, shaking my head, "Not happening buddy!"
"Jade, is that you?" A familiar voice sounded from behind me. I couldn't have been more popular today. I turned to see the man of the hour standing there. Darry took one look at me, and horror registered on his face, "You alright!?" he scowled at Cort, thinking he had something to do with it.
He only thought that because Cort was the closest male near me. Darry loved to jump to conclusions about things like this, as sort of a protective measure against me.
I waved my hand, with the other still on the pained rib, "I'm fine but I think I broke a bone. Please don't freak out." I pleaded with him. Darry breathed slowly in, and then out again. For once he didn't blow up or become scatter brained. He listened to me.

Darry finished work early to take care of me. I did feel extra guilty that he would be missing out on some cash but I needed his help. He placed me on the couch with an ice pack after concluding that I had only minor bruising to my rib. I was surprised he didn't ask questions about how I got it.
As I slouched in front of the television, flicking through the channels, he was outside tending to Sodapop's car, which wasn't odd. He was too tired after work to deal with his own mechanical issues that he let Darry mess around with any troubles he was having.
Soda was in the kitchen, grabbing some after work snacks when the telephone began to ring off its hinges. He ignored the first call but then when another came in, he answered.
"What!" he barked into the receiver with a mouth full of bread. He listens for a second before apologising to whoever was on the other line, and holding the phone to his chest, "Jade phone!" he called out to me before returning it to his ear, "She'll be right with you."
Thinking it was Dallas, I was nervous to tell him what had happened between Lynn and I. I didn't have to worry about that when I heard Curly Shepard's voice over the line.
"How I missed you." he growled sarcastically, "You never rang. You never came to see me, but guess what princess?" he snarked, laughing devilishly, "I'm out and coming to tell Darry your little secret."
The blood drained from my cheeks. I wanted to scream at him, yell even... but Soda was listening in on me from the living room. I whispered, "Come near here and you'll die."
Curly's snickers muffled over the bad reception before he hung up the line on me. I lost it and slammed the phone into the wall. Soda yelled out at me to stop. I finally cooled after a few moments but inside I was raging like wildfire.
