Chapter Three: Not As They Had Seemed

I stood outside of the room Quackity was in, my ear pressed to the door. I had to figure out what he was up to, and who he worked for. A million questions ran through my mind; who was Monty? What did 'control the world' mean? Was he really still a good guy?

Things were not as they had seemed, I thought to myself, before realizing that I quoted the chapter title and almost swearing aloud.

"Before I leave," Quackity was saying from inside the room. "I wanted to ask; how's the Project coming along?"

The Project? What was that? It couldn't be some grand scheme that Quackity had been secretly forming behind our backs, was it? That would make him a bad guy!

Suddenly, Quackity began to laugh evilly, filling the room he was in with vengeful cackles. It was at that moment that I fully realized that he definitely was a bad guy. No good guys would laugh that menacingly! It's not in our nature!

"Don't worry about them, I'm gonna take care of them right now. Those fools are so screwed!" Quackity laughed. That was the last straw. I grabbed the handle of the door and flung it open.

"Shit-" he exclaimed, pulling the phone away from his ear. "Uh- I gotta go! Love you, uh, Dad!"

He pressed a button on his phone, hanging it up.

"Hello, Wonder!" he greeted, smiling. "What are you doing here?"

I thought to myself, wondering whether I should tell him about the conversation I had just overheard. Perhaps if I didn't say anything, I would be able to spy on him and gather more information, and foil his evil plans before they even started.

"I was...uh...looking for the bathrooms!" I lied easily. "Yeah! That was what I was doing!"

Quackity looked me up and down. "They're on the other side of the casino."

"Oh, how stupid of me!" I exclaimed. "Thank you, Quackity! You're such a good, loyal friend to me!"

I heavily emphasized the words "good," loyal," and "friend."

"Of course, Wonder." Quackity grinned at me. Under normal circumstances this would have been friendly, but now it just seemed evil. I turned and speedwalked out of the room, skipping the bathrooms and heading back to Techno and the rest of the group. They were all laughing and conversing happily amongst each other. I wondered how many of them were traitors.

I didn't really trust Ennard, since he had fought against us in The Battle of Las Nevadas. He seemed like a really cool dude, however, so my mistrust could be wrong. Could Vision and White be in on it too? I highly doubted this, since they had only recently been hired. And Techno obviously couldn't be on Quackity's side, since he was my boyfriend!

I reached the group at the bar and tapped on Techno's shoulder. He paused his conversation with White and turned to me.

"Wonder? What is it?" he asked, noticing the nervousness on my face. "Is something wrong?"

"Maybe," I whispered. "Come outside with me, I heard something strange."

Techno nodded, excusing himself from the group and following me outside. Neither of us noticed Ennard watching us closely as we left, a knowing expression on his face.

"She knows..." he whispered to himself.

"What was that?" Vision asked.

"Oh, nothing, just thinking out loud," Ennard told him. "Anyways, what were you saying about that bottle of syrup?"
