A Cold One || 5

 {POV: Y/N 1}

I was at Pierre's General Store, looking for seeds. The backpack was kinda pricey, but I had enough. After buying everything I needed, I headed out. The sky was dark. 

I checked my watch, and it was nighttime. I decided to take the long way back home, through Cindersnap Forest.

I spotted Shane sitting on his front porch, smoking a cigarette. I hesitated, then walked over there and sat down next to him.

  "Hi." I said, timidly. He didn't respond at first. It almost looked like he was in a daze.. I was confused. I waved my hand in front of his face.

"What the hell do you want? I'm obviously busy here.." It was almost like he was lecturing me. It made me jump a tiny bit, since it was out of nowhere. The smell of cigarettes flooded throughout my nose.

"Oh, my apologies. You just seem.. lonely. I know I saw you at the dock the other day, but you just seem.. lonelier. I just assumed you wanted company. Do you mind if I have a cigarette? It's no fun to smoke alone."

"...Sure, I guess. But, you need to pay me back." He handed me a cigarette.

"For a single cigarette?" I questioned. Why would I need to pay him back for one cigarette? Odd..

"Yes, one. Get your hearing checked, dumbass." Why does he have such a bad attitude? I mean, smoking does affect moods..

"Y'know.. there are positive things to look forward to in life. You shouldn't throw away your life." I grabbed a lighter from my back pocket, and lit the cigarette. 

"Eh, I've already thrown away my life." Thrown away his life? 

"So I'm guessing you got lost in drugs.." I sighed and took a long drag from the cigarette.

"...Yeah. I need to start paying more attention to my goddaughter, Jas. My aunt Marine has been taking care of her more than I ever will, heh.." I could tell that he wanted to be a better person, and father.

"..I gotta go." I got up and took the cigarette with me, and walked back to my farm. I needed time to think about what he said.. Shane deserves better.

As I laid down in my bed, I thought about what I could do to make a difference in Shane's life. It would be difficult, but I could do it.
