"Do we really have to go?" Akane hushed her husband when he voiced his question. "We don't have a choice on this one." She answered.
"Why can't we just take her with us? I'll be sure to be on my best behaviour! I'll keep an eye on her, I swear!"
"Lukas, you know that it's not safe to bring her with us." Akane hissed, pink eyes glowing eerily.
"But," Lukas furrowed his brow, shaking his head. "Is it safe here? I know Kayama will take care of her for now, but what if she's called in? What if we get injured? A week-long stay could easily turn into a month-long one!"
Akane sighed, exasperated at the repeated conversation that they'd been having for the past few days. "It's not safe in the states for us!"
Lukas raised his voice, "Neither is it here!"
Akane looked a little startled at the sudden increase in volume, but promptly shushed him. Charlotte was still asleep, they couldn't afford to wake her up in the middle of the night.
Lukas sighed, "I'm sorry for raising my voice." Akane nodded stiffly. "I didn't mean to," Lukas frowned.
Akane let out a laugh, small and tired, but still bright nonetheless. Gently, she brought her hand up to his face. "It's okay honey-lemon, I know you didn't mean it. I can tell."
Lukas's shoulders visibly relaxed, releasing the tension. After a pause between the both of them, private and understanding, he continued.
"I get what you mean when you say that it isn't safe over there. Who'll look after her? Who'll keep an eye on her? What if she gets caught up in something dangerous? I get it," Lukas smiled, "but you're not the only one who's worried."
"I'm worried out of my mind here." Lukas admitted, "Things here aren't all that safe too, especially for us, not when many are targeting you."
Akane visibly winced. "You know it more than I do." He said.
It was true, she really did, more than Lukas could ever imagine.
"I want to bring our baby along with us, you want to keep her here with Kayama. Both are equally dangerous, both from old and new causes." Lukas reasoned, "I'd prefer it if we kept her with us, because at least if there was danger she would be in our sight, instead of on the other side of the globe. But it's valid to say that our trip to America this time could be the most dangerous yet, maybe even more so than anything we've ever done so far."
"I understand," Akane breathed, in and out. "I really do."
"But think about Lukas, why would we suddenly be requested, an urgent call from the US? It doesn't make any sense. We've partnered with some agencies there and had our fair share of fame, but if it were dire then wouldn't they reach out to heroes in their own country?" Akane clicked her tongue, pink orbs narrowing. "I don't know why, but I get the feeling that this is just all a big hoax.
Lukas felt a pit in his stomach. "Akane," He said, "Akane." Garnering her attention as he grabbed his shoulder, guiding her to face him entirely. "Are you sure? If you're absolutely sure, then we can see what we can do."
"I didn't suspect it until you mentioned it just now, but it does feel a bit suspicious that no context was given. Granted, it may be confidential, but this isn't the way they do things, is it?" Lukas rambled, trying to get his thoughts straight.
"Still, I think it's better to leave her here. As you've said, it's dangerous, more so than ever before." She furrowed her brows, "With so much uncertainty, I'd rather she stay here with something known rather than unknown."
