ALMOST A WEEK had passed since Irina and Steve's talk out on the fire escape. Walking through the hallways now, the pair would send one another little smiles and hold eye contact for more than a second at a time.

A rumour had been circling at school that Nancy had cheated on him with Jonathan Byers, even before Steve and Nancy broke up at the Halloween party. While the pair did seem to be together a lot of the time, Irina was skeptical of it because it had come from the mouths of Tommy Hagan and Billy Hargrove, the new kid.
She just hoped her name didn't get dragged into it. She and Steve had formed a friendship, and it didn't go unnoticed. He gave her a lift home from school yesterday. That had earned the two of them some funny looks. Irina wondered whether it was worth it. The drama, the gossip, the rumours... Steve. But when she was with him he made her laugh. He made her smile. And she didn't want to throw it away because of other people.

The school day was over now though and Irina was on her journey home. She was close to her house. So close, in fact, she could see her house and the surrounding houses, including the Henderson's. Confusion crossed her face though, when she saw Dustin out on the front yard dropping slices of meat all over the patio. When she approached, she saw that he was wearing hockey gear and holding a hockey stick.

"Uh, Dustin? Are you okay?" She called. His head whipped in her direction and he let out an awkward chuckle, "Oh, uh-Irina. Hey."

"What are you doing?" She asked.

"I-uh-I-I lost my cat. Just trying to, you know... lure Mews back." He stuttered. Irina knew he was lying a mile off.

"With... sliced meat... on your driveway?" She questioned.

"... yep." Dustin replied.

"D-do you need help?" Irina offered.

"Oh, no, I think I can manage-" Dustin was cut off by a loud screech coming from the house. Irina's eyes widened as she stared at the house.

"What was that?" She asked, startled.

"The noise? Oh, it was just the oven. We need a new one, right?" Dustin chuckled, but Irina wasn't buying it. She started towards the house, avoiding the meat on the floor.

"Don't go inside!" Dustin protested, grabbing Irina's arm. "The oven is very dangerous right now. It might explode." He told her.

"Dustin, tell me the truth." Irina cocked a brow.

"I am!" He protested.
