The next morning, Carina was up early just because her body wouldn't let her sleep well when her girlfriend was in the hospital. She tossed and turned in their bed for a while before getting up, deciding to pack a bag for Maya considering the night before, it had just been a mad rush to get out the door.
She texted Maggie too, asking how Maya was doing. Maggie told her she was sound asleep and her oxygen numbers were perfect. When she woke up, they were going to get some bloodwork done on her to see how the meds were working, but for now, they were just going to let her rest. Carina asked if she could come down there and sit with her. Maggie asked her to wait until the nurses went through their shift change at 8, and then she was welcome to come down.
Carina sighed, knowing Maggie was right, but she still wanted to be with Maya all the time. She decided to go make some breakfast for Travis and Vic, deciding to make cinnamon rolls because they would take a long time and waste time until she could go to the hospital.
She was just putting the rolls in a pan to rise when she heard a door open, Travis coming into the kitchen.
"Hey," he said sleepily, "Sorry, I went to bed before you got back last night. How is she doing?"
He had told Carina he could stay up and come get her from the hospital, but she told him she would just take an Uber, having no idea how late she was going to be.
"According to Maggie, much better this morning," Carina said, putting the last of the cinnamon rolls into the pan before covering it with a towel, "She is breathing better and her oxygen is back up where it should be."
"Is she going to get to come home today?" Travis asked, sitting down at the counter.
"Probably not until at least tomorrow," Carina sighed, "Maggie wants to get her levels of her blood thinners to a safe place and make sure the clots are gone."
"I'm sure she loves that," Travis said, shaking his head.
"I think yesterday scared her a lot," Carina said, "She didn't fight me on going to the hospital or using the wheelchair or anything."
"It scared me," Travis said, "I knew that was a potential complication of Covid, but I never even thought about any of my friends dealing with it. She looked so sick."
"I was scared too," Carina admitted, "Her lips started turning blue in the shower which was terrifying. I know Vic said it happened when she was first hospitalized, but I didn't see that. But Maggie got her treated very quickly, and she was looking better even by the time I left last night."
"Did she just have one big PE?" Travis asked as Carina finished cleaning up the kitchen.
"She had about a dozen small ones," Carina sighed, "I saw the scans Maggie did, which did not go well because apparently Maya is allergic to the dye they use for them."
"Yikes," Travis said, wincing, "Michael was allergic to that dye. He had to have some scans on his salivary glands because they were giving him some issues and wow did he get sick from the dye."
"Same for Maya," Carina nodded, "Luckily, she got treated for that quickly, but she still had some hives when I left last night."
"She just can't catch a break," Travis said, shaking his head, "Are you going back today?"
"Si," Carina nodded, "Maggie just asked that I wait until after shift change at 8."
"So, you decided to make cinnamon rolls at 7 am?" Travis said, laughing.
"I needed to be busy," Carina sighed, "I didn't sleep great last night and if I just kept lying in bed, I probably would have had a panic attack."
