Chapter 9: Not What I Need
•)Alex's POV(•
Riiing!
I groaned as I lifted my head off of a hard, wooden table. Why was I sleeping on a table? I looked around as my eyes adjusted to the light.
As I noticed my aunt, quietly asleep on her hospital bed, a pang of sadness struck my heart. Seeing all the tubes attached to her and her fragile body made me nauseous.
Riiiiiiing!
I fished my phone out of my pocket and answered the call, forgetting to check the caller ID.
"Hello?" I said, tone filled with drowsiness.
"Where are you?" Someone yelled from the other side of the line. I groaned and pulled the phone away from my ear as I felt a headache coming on.
"What do you mean? Is there somewhere I'm supposed to be?" I murmured as I stood up. I kissed Lucy on the forehead and a frown etched on my face.
"School! You already missed two days and first period so hurry the hell up! I'm worried about you. Where are you anyways?" Sam's tone turned serious.
"It doesn't matter, I just overslept and got had important things to do on the other days," I lied. I agreed with myself that I would not tell anyone about this. It's too painful to talk about, it opens old wounds. Plus, it's personal and no one needs to know about my own family issues.
"Ok well I better see you next hour," she muttered suspiciously, but deciding to drop it anyways. "Well I've got to go, someone's calling for me. Bye." She immediately hung up the phone as I sighed.
I glanced in the mirror and took a look at my appearance. I barely even recognized myself. My eyes were puffy from crying and I had dark bruises under my eyes for being sleep deprived. I looked like I had two black eyes. My hair was in knots, my face looked placid and my cheeks were hollow.
But right now, I couldn't care less. I threw on a hoodie and some sweatpants, not bothering about the temperature. At this moment, I just feel numb, empty. When your loved one is in risk of dying, cancer for pete's sake, things don't seem to matter as much as before.
I skipped breakfast even though my stomach greatly disagreed. I knew I couldn't possibly eat at a time like this. I quickly got to the school building and parked in the farthest from the front. I just want to go unnoticed today, I don't need questions right now.
I hung my head and pulled my hood down to block my face from view. I speedily reached doors and hurried to my class. When I walked in, I rushed to the farthest corner in the back, slumping down into the seat.
I knew many pairs of eyes were on me, but I didn't dare look up. The teacher brought the attention back to himself but I still felt one my pair of eyes boring into me, as if never leaving. It was him, he was here. He skips almost 9 out of 10 times a day but I just happened to catch him on that 1 tenth. Just fantastic.
I turned my head to obscure myself from view even more. The teacher continued his lesson and whilst I should have been taking notes, I never even had the slightest motivation to pull out my book like before.
Before I found out. Looks like those "A"s are going out the window.
It was weird though, because for the whole class, I could have sworn the feeling of two hot pings boring into the back of my head never left for the whole class period.

I skipped lunch and The next few periods, I got the same amount of attention as before. Is it so wrong to wear a hoodie and sweat pants when it's 90 degrees out?
