Sophie sucked in a breath. "This isn't how I thought my day would go,"
Alden scoffed. "Well, I didn't expect you to take someone's life, yet here we are."
"You're one to talk."
He paled and the melder in his hand dipped slightly.
"Focus, Lord Alden. She's just stalling," an emissary she didn't recognize said, also armed. He turned to Sophie. "You were convicted of voluntary manslaughter, and were sentenced to exile and a mind break. We're here to bring you back."
"And how do you suppose you'll do that?" She snapped back.
The stranger waved someone over from the trees. Three other emissaries stepped out with melders presses to Biana, Dex and Linh's heads.
"Let them go," She demanded at the same time Marella shouted, "You said you would let her go!"
Sophie's head whipped to look at Marella. "What?"
Marella frowned before tilting her chin up. Alden spoke sternly when he said, "Marella decided to uphold the law and give us your location. She did so in exchange for Dex and Linh's saftey." He nodded behind him at the guard holding Linh hostage. "You can let her go now."
When the guard did, Marella ran over to her girlfriend and crushed her in a hug.
"How could you?" Sophie's yelled, her words full of betrayal and hurt. Tears crowded the corner of her eyes as fire begged to respond to her grief, pleading for revenge. Not yet. Soon, she thought to herself.
Alden coughed, dragging her out of the draw for her new power. "Now, you have two options. One, you can come with us, you and Biana go to exile, we wash the human's mind, and no one gets hurt. " Laura struggled against the emissary's grip. "Or two, you try and run away and Dex and Biana get melder shots to the head. Your choice."
I chose number three; stall. She thought. "That's your daughter you're talking about. Don't you have a heart?"
Alden scowled. She'd clearly struck a nerve. "She is no daughter of mine. She's a murderer and a blight on the Vacker name."
"I think you mean your other kids. And by the way, do I really need to point out what they all have in common?"
There's no way I can save both of them without getting Biana killed.
With that comment, Alden was, quite frankly, pissed. "I'm done with this. Take her." With that command the emissaries surged forward, their fingers on the triggers. But they didn't fire.
They're bluffing, she realized. They wouldn't shoot a Vacker nor an inflictor. No matter how murderous.
She tried to get closer to her so that they could teleport, but the emissary that was holding her captive light lept away.
Her other friends we're soon to leave to, the glittering light fading from the corner of her eye.
That left her and Laura.
Shit. Laura.
She whipped around and found an emissary fumbling for a Pathfinder while Laura struggled against their grip. She broke free, running full speed towards the other side of the skate park.
Sophie chased after her with the emissaries close behind.
Her legs felt like they could shake the concrete when she channeled into them. She managed to catch up to Laura, grabbing her by the back of her shirt and yanking her into the deep end of the dipping ramp, making them fall into the void.

They tumble into an familiar parisian alley.
It was a beautiful place, really. The old brick. The smell of baking bread so thick you could almost taste it. The late afternoon sunlight casting a warm glow over the entire world. It really was beautiful.
For any other person but Sophie.
Memories long since past came surging back with a vengeance, and this time Dex wasn't there to comfort her. The ropes bond her hands, the flames coated her arms. She was back in the last place she ever wanted to be.
She squeezed her eyes shut, desperately trying to stop the tears that theartened to spill.
"Are you okay? What's wrong? " a gentle voice prodded her.
She wipes her eyes to find Laura standing over her.
"I'm sorry. It's nothing." She said giving what she hoped was a a reassuring smile.
"Of course. I didn't mean to press. On that note, where the fuck did you take me?"
"We're in Paris."
"Okay, how the fuck are we in Paris?"
"It's a long story."
Laura crossed her arms. "I've got time since you just kidnapped me."
Sophie sighed and brushed herself off, standing. "From the bottom of my cold, dead heart, My bad."
She scoffed. "Well you could at least answer some questions if you're going to be a bitch."
And she did. Mostly. She avoided admitting that she killed someone at all costs, but for the most part, she answered all of her questions honestly. She explained the elves, the Black Swan, the Neverseen, the council and why they were chasing her, (Laura wasn't too pleased with the fact that she was a criminal.) And eventually Project Moonlark.
"So, let me get this straight," Laura began. "We are the result of an elven genetic experiment that is supposed to work for a secret-not-so-secrect-anymore organization that wants to defeat a terrorist organization that wants to kill all humans because of... climate change?"
"Basically, yeah." Sophie answered.
"Couldn't they just... Plant some trees? Or something? Anything but that?"
Sophie shrugged. "I guess that's not how insane elves' brains work."
During the time Sophie was explaining everything about the elven world, they had been walking aimlessly. They reached a park bench and Laura sat down, rubbing her temples.
Sophie sat down beside her. "I know it's a lot to process,"
Laura sighed. "It's just... How am I going to balance it all? My human life and my elven life, I mean. I want to go to Foxfire, but I also want to finish college."
She felt her heart shatter at that. She knew that she would never get the normal life that she dreamed of. But she had to give her hope. "I'm sure we'll figure it out."
She didn't meet her eyes as she delivered the lie. But maybe it wasn't a lie. Maybe she could make sure she could grow up without being forced into the box of being a solider. She swore to herself then that she would try.
She would try to give her the future she deserved. She would fight in her place, if only in shame and shadows.
"So, what now? I need to get home to my family." Laura piped up.
"You can't go home. Not yet. The council is going to find you and wipe your memory if we go back now," they watched the sun sink below the horizon. "For now, I need to find out how to get my girlfriend back."

So, how'd you like the chapter?
Sorry it was short, again I have major writer's block.
On another note, I might start a different book with a bunch of one shots. Is that a good idea? Let me know in the comments!
See ya later!
