Sophie's POV:

Getting Biana back wasn't a choice. She needed her back if Sophie was going to take down... several groups, actually.

Several groups deserved to disappear if she was going to keep Laura from the same fate as Sophie.

"I'll ask you this one more time. Why are we here? " Laura complained harshly. They had been walking for several miles to a familiar bridge.

Sophie sighed as her boots stomped against the stone road. "I told you already. I need to leave a message to some friends in the Lost cities."

She only had a scrap of a plan, and she could only try it once. She twisted the panic switch on her finger with anxiety.

They reached the Alexandra bridge and Sophie stopped to take in the elegant yet unwelcome sight.

"Woah," Laura breathed from behind her. "I knew France was supposed to be beautiful, but... how did you know about this place?"

"A long, unpleasant story that you never want to hear, " she replied with a shaky breath.

Sophie strode over to to the lantern with the leaping crystal on it and took of her panic switch, sliding it on a hooked part of the lantern.

"What's that?" Laura asked.

"It's a tracker that only works when I press this button," she pointed to the gem in the center of the ring. "Do you have a piece of paper and something to write with?"

Laura quickly patted the pockets of her jeans and found an old receipt and a pen. "Will this work?"

Sophie heaved a sigh of relief. "That's perfect, thanks." She took the things from her and pressed the paper against a flat part of the lantern.

The her hand hovered over it with the pen. What would she say? What could she tell Dex that would make him help her get Biana back? To explain this crazy situation she had gotten all of them into?

She pressed the pen to the back of the receipt.

Might as well make it rhyme.

Meet me where I come back from a fade,
The song of a tree comforts like a wink.
Where a villain did wade,
In the same waves the sun sinks.
I did cause so much trouble,
How could you not, in this new fight?
Why not make it double?
Overmorrow, Moonlarks will take flight.

Sophie looked it over once and folded tightly, stuffing it into the center of the ring.

"Why does it rhyme?" Laura questioned.

"Another long story that I'll tell you later. Right now, though," Sophie said, pressing the panic button on the ring. "We need to run."

Dex's POV:

Dex was still to stunned and hurt at Marella's betrayal to speak for several hours after they left the forbidden cities.

He felt like he was living in third person as Biana was dragged away, gone to a lonely prison cell.

He didn't know where Linh went, and he didn't really care, to caught up in the fear of losing some of his closest friends.

He was empty when the council let him go back to rimeshire. Couldn't feel his mother's hugs or gentle questions.

That was until his panic switch started buzzing.

He leaped out of bed and ran over to the tiny protector that he had built. He pushed his ring into the slot on the device and immediately a hologram popped up of someone's location.

Sophie's location.

Dex recognized the bridge she was at immediately and ran over to his imparter, about to call Sophie to teleport him there.

"Shit," he whispered harshly when he realized that wasn't an option.

Then he had a better idea. A stupid one, to be sure, but an idea nonetheless.

He grabbed his obscurer and a crystal to Havenfield, then disappeared into the light.

_

He reappeared in front of the expansive care facility. Verdi roared behind him while goblin guards patrolled the area. All of them spotted him but decided he wasn't a threat and kept going around the home.

Dex wandered around Sophie's home, searching for Silveny. Eventually he found her, trotting around the gorgodon enclosure with Wynn and Luna.

He smiled and jogged over to them, but was stopped by a voice yelling behind him.

"Dex?" Edaline called.

Dex whipped around to find her striding over.

"Hi Aunt Edaline," He hugged her tightly.

When he pulled away he immediately noticed her dark under eyes, as deep as bruises. Losing Sophie had taken it's toll.

"What are you doing here?" Edaline asked gently.

He couldn't tell her. He couldn't give her a hope that could turn into nothing. "I was coming to check on you and Grady. My mom's worried about you guys."

She gave him the world's saddest smile. "We'll be ok. Is there something else you need?"

"I was just going to visit Calla's tree. Maybe it could help me cope with everything that's happened."

She dipped her head. "Ok. If you need anything you can talk to me, alright?"

Dex nodded and made the rest of his way to Silveny.

"Ok, " he murmured, patting her nose. "Listen. We need to go for a really long ride, ok girl? Can you understand me? Are we good?"

Silveny whinnied and bent down, which Dex took as a yes.

Dex climbed onto her back and Silveny took to the sky.

He traveled on her back hours, the air getting colder the longer they flew.

By the time he had flicked on his obscurer and they landed on Alexandra bridge, the sky was glowing with the early light of dawn.

Dex slid off of Silveny's back and into the cobblestone road. He scanned the area for Sophie or anyone he recognized, but he found no one.

Another idea popped into his head and he ran over to the lantern with the leaping crystal on it. Sure enough, he found a ring with a note tucked tightly inside.

He picked it up and unfolded the note, reading the poem over and over. A poem. Of course it would be a poem. All in true Black Swan agent fashion.

Wait, scanned the note again, hoping he misread it. Moonlarks? Plural?
