Song:
Black (Pearl Jam)
"I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why, why, why can't it be mine."Callisto had read the note so many times, it was a wonder how the words still didn't seem to be processed properly in her head. At first, she was too busy trying to understand how the note would end up in her bag anyway, only to realize that she was a witch, living in a magical castle, among other witches, wizards and magical creatures. Then, she got confused because the full moon was rather lovely, and Remus was more than just lovely too, so why the hell would she not like him and a full moon together? If anything, it sounded like the perfect romantic setting.
And then, she realized she had no right being in the DADA class. Surely, being as clueless about the subject as she was had to be an offense to the teacher, the class, the entire school and whoever was above it.
The answer was obvious.
Remus Lupin was a werewolf.
By definition, werewolves were dangerous. After a quick trip to the library and more specifically, the third year section in the DADA compartment, she had confirmed that werewolves could potentially cause a lot of harm. Ivan had told her many times himself that he was dangerous, but Callisto was too young to understand at that time. After all, if most of the times you see someone they're injured, you can't really think of them as a menace. He insisted on the fact that he could harm both her and her aunt, but she never really got to hear the end of that monologue because Elena would be quick to shut him up with a bunch of potions.
The thing that concerned her the most though was the reason behind Monica sending her the note. It was clear that she wanted to cause trouble, but why? If she did it out of pure spite for werewolves, she would have sent the note to someone like Lucious Malfoy. Callisto didn't hate werewolves and Monica knew that.
In reality, the note was a failed attempt at making Callisto think differently of Remus. That, and Remus following the purposely horrible advice Monica had given him, were guaranteed to change Callisto's entire perspective and perhaps, lead her back to her arms.
Except that Callisto didn't feel differently about Remus to the smallest degree. In fact, she was more mad at herself for not realizing it sooner. Once again, in her defense, Callisto and DADA were like oil and water. But, she would have hoped that acknowledging all his symptoms, seeing him completely wrecked after a full moon twice and already knowing someone with Lycanthropy, would have made her more perceptive.
She didn't need to read anything more to know that there was no cure for Lycanthropy. If there was one, there would be no werewolves, just like if there was a cure for blood curses, she would be just fine. Perhaps there was a mutual understanding between them without knowing each other's conditions and that's why Callisto had confided in him. In a sense, she understood him. She didn't transform every full moon into a wolf, but she was in and out of hospitals her entire life, just like him. They both knew what the isolation and the pain felt like.
