Dec. 9, 1940
Dear James,
When your letter arrived this morning, I was nearly certain there had been some mistake. Yet, reading your message gave me consolation that I was wrong.
I did not mean to make you feel thrown overboard when I told you I wanted you to stay. I only hoped my words might somehow change the fact that you were leaving despite knowing it could not be true. Believe me, today is the first day without you that I am somewhat joyous- and that is only as a result of your letter.
I do hope you send more, it shall make the pain of your absence less, if nothing else.
In the meantime, I eagerly await your return.
Sincerely,
Steven
