Amber
"Can someone please describe how Edgar Allen Poe probably felt while writing this scene of "The Raven"? Mrs.Giger paces around her Advanced Lit. students with lingering eyes watching our every move.
This is my last class of the day, and I can go home to a lesser stressed environment.
A brown haired kid with glasses shuffled in his seat with his hand raised high, "I can I can!"
Oh my gosh he acts like we aren't Juniors in high school. I feel like we're back in elementary actually.
Mrs.Giger calls on the eager student, "He was probably feeling really happy. He wanted to write about his love!"
Wrong. Did he even read the story?
He smiles contently to himself after answering, thinking he is right.
Mrs.Giger looks at him confused, "Well, not quite, but good try. Anyone else?"
No one raises their hand and I suddenly feel a whim of confidence since I know the answer. But what if it's wrong? Liam is in this class, if I get it wrong he will think I'm so stupid!
It's not wrong Amber, just say it. Liam will think you're totally awesome and hot if you answer correctly. You will be praised and you will feel good. Just what is needed!
But you will feel stupid and embarrassed, bad idea. Bad idea!
My confidence won and my hand raises wearily. Mrs.Giger's eyes widen and she calls on me immediately.
"I think he's obviously feeling sad, he has a horrible dark cloud over his head since his passing of his wife. So he writes about it in a unique and dark way. Showing both the sadness and his longing for her to be in his arms again."
Mrs.Giger forms an ecstatic smile, "Very good, exactly the answer I was looking for!"
I smile to myself, glad my confidence payed off. I wish I could answer more questions, I just have such a bad fear of getting the answer wrong and feeling so judged and stupid after it.
I look over to Liam to see if he has noticed me yet. But I just find him joking with his friend Zayn in the back corner, not paying attention whatsoever.
I sigh and lean back in my chair, still going unnoticed.
-
The bell rings relieving the students to their home lives. Mrs.Giger approaches me just as I'm about to walk out the door."Hey, can I talk to you real quick?"
I nod heavily, "Yeah, of course."
"Don't worry, you're not in trouble or anything, just have to talk to you about something." She laughs relieving my anxiety build up.
I sigh in relief and let out a slight chuckle, "Oh okay, good. What's up?"
"Well, there is a student in here who is having a few problems. His grades are slipping and I'm not sure why. He's really smart, and I know he just isn't using his full potential. I was wondering if you could tutor him and help him pass this class, because as of right now, he isn't." She sighs, looking over to one remaining student packing up his books.
"Alright man see you later!" Zayn shouts to Liam brushing past Mrs.Giger and I.
I sigh and look over at Zayn, then back at Mrs.Giger, "Well if that's what is needed then I'll give it a shot."
She shakes her head quickly, "Oh no, not Zayn. He's surprisingly passing the class, even though he doesn't pay much attention. It's Liam who I'm talking about." She motions towards him as he just finishes collecting his books.
My mouth drops open, "What? Oh no, I, oh no. I, are you sure he can't? Uh," I start to panic.
"Amber, it's okay. He doesn't bite. Please do this for me, you're my only hope. You have the best grade in the class and you get 100%'s on every test and assignment. Please." She begs.
Liam starts walking through the class, looking at his phone and not even bothering to look up as he just passed us.
"Liam!" Mrs.Giger calls, stopping Liam in his tracks just about to leave the door.
"Yeah?" He glances up from his phone quickly after laughing at something he obviously found funny on the screen.
He still hasn't looked at me, just straight at our teacher. My heart starts beating like crazy once he approaches us only looking at her.
"Remember how I was talking to you about getting a tutor? And you agreed?" She prys.
He looks up at the ceiling like he's thinking, "Nope, don't remember. Well I have to go now." He turns on his heels but Mrs.Giger yells his name again with an annoyed tone.
He shuts his eyes and turns back reluctantly, "Yeah," he sighs his beautiful sigh, "I remember."
"Good!" She claps, "Well her she is. Liam, this is Amber." She motions towards me and the moment I have been waiting for since I first saw him in the 4th grade, my eyes meet with his.
My heart completely exploded I think. I stood numb and let out a faint, "Hi" and my cheeks flushed red.
He looked me up and down and sighs, "Okay. Meet me at my house around 6, practice gets out at 5:30. Here's my address." He says scribbling it down on a piece of paper and handing it to me.
My hand can barley reach out and grab it just by the numbing feeling of his beautiful accented voice talking to me and telling me to come to his house.
I think I just died inside.
"Uh, o-okay." I manage grabbing the paper gently from him slightly brushing against his fingers.
My heart explodes again at the finger brushing.
He smiles at Mrs.Giger and turns on his heels yet again and leaves.
"Wow, well you're going to have some time there. Good luck Amber, I appreciate it."
And with that Mrs.Giger leaves me in her room staring at the paper with Liam's scribbly boy typical boy handwriting that he had just given to me.
I find myself walking quickly out of the classroom and running into Nicole freaking out.
