Chapter 56

Gabrielle's POV
I heard laughing so I followed it. I found them, Taynera, and Buck having breakfast.

"Uh morning?"

"Morning!"

"You made breakfast? Without help?"

"Well we read the instructions on the box."

"Little man has bananas and strawberries. Tay has baby food."

"Did you give him a full banana?"

"No. I cut it in half. I cut the strawberries too."

Buck picked up his cup and was holding it up.

"What was he drinking?"

"Water."

I grabbed his cup and put more water in it. I gave it back to him then grabbed a plate. I put food on my plate and started eating.

"I'm surprised. This is actually good."

Ryker looked at his phone.

"I gotta go. I told Jenny I'd go to her house to help her with her homework."

He got up and put his plate in the sink. Then he walked away.

"How's your ankle?"

"Better."

"What were you laughing about?"

"I ran into a wall."

"Of course you did."

His mood changed right after I said that.

"What's wrong?"

"I dunno. I have a feeling this week is going to be bad."

"Now that you said it probably will be."

During the entire week he was paranoid. He made sure he didn't argue with anyone.

"Devin breathe. It's okay. Focus on your game. It's an away game. You'll be away from here. I think my parents said we're going to eat somewhere after."

I went to wake Buck up from his nap.

"Daddy doesn't feel right. Think you can change that?"

I helped him get out of his bed. He started running. I ran after him.

"Don't go by the stairs!"

He ran right into my room. I heard sniffling.

"Hey little man."

Wow.

Something really is wrong.

I walked into my room and saw Devin hugging Buck. He was crying. I walked up to them. Devin held his right arm out. I held my arm out and he grabbed my wrist and made me a part of the hug. I started rubbing his back.

"Talk to me. What's going on?"

"I don't know how to explain it."

"By any chance does this have to do with Jane?"

"I-I don't know. Probably."

I pulled back to face him. I cupped his face and wiped his tears away using my thumbs.

"You can't let her get to you. You have to tell someone she's harassing you."

"I'll just cause problems."

"I doubt that. How about this? Get through today. If it does turn out to be a bad night you'll get a distraction okay?"

He nodded. I kissed him. Before we went to the game we stopped to get his phone number changed. After that the car ride to the field was about 25 minutes. Devin was picking his cuticles. I grabbed his hands so he'd stop. At the field I pulled him aside so I could talk to him privately.
