"Parro, remember your training, alright? You can do this honey." Parro's mother placed her wings on the young rito's shoulders, reassuring him about his courage in this first competition.
"Orville, remember your stance, yeah? Keep your wings alinged with the flow of the wind, and always keep your eyes on the clouds in the distance. They'll guide you." Orville's dad patted his back and gave him a thumbs up, and the young red rito nervously smiled and gave him one back.
"Eagle, we didn't go through all this training for nothing, boy. You know what you want. That big gold trophy over there." Eagle's father eyed the piece of gold, and Eagle sighed and nodded, not wishing to disappoint his father.
"Revali, you'll do great. Just keep focus on the flight and everything will go just fine." Revali's aunt fixed up his armor, and he huffed and nodded. "You have the confidence, and you have the strength and attention. I believe in you."
"Yeah yeah, I get it." He scoffed, readying his stance for when Bizz said to go. "I'm gonna be fine, Carla."
"Bizz, you know how to give the signal, we talked about this." Bizz's father Bixx handed him the megaphone and he nodded and held it up to his beak, only to have his father flip it around the correct way. "Come on, now."
"Alright! Young rito of the village, ready your positions." All of the younger ritos participating in this competition got ready, and Bizz started his count. "Three, two, one... GO!" All of the birds leaped off, one after the other after the other.
So far in the lead was Parro, but because he luckily had a good push off. Orville soon took over, keeping his focus on the clouds to guide him through the beginning.
Soon obstacles began clouding his view, and he tried to avoid them but seemed to not keep up as well as others. So Eagle quickly stole his lead, followed incredibly close by Revali.
One or two other competitors were close, but soon got further behind the pair. It was neck in neck for most of the obstacle course.
"Hey," Eagle said, looking behind him at the blue bird. "If you could maybe slow down a bit and show me your techniques, that'd be great."
"Sure!" Revali sped up, and Eagle grunted and tried to catch up again. Now they were fighting a mini wind storm, and in this time, all of the other rito children competing got way behind. Revali stayed ahead by an inch while Eagle was by his side.
There were now two targets, and both boys flipped to grab their arrows before shooting them, revealing two more for each. Those were quickly shot down as well, and then they could see one large target, and a small golden arrow in front of it. Whoever got it first and shot the target would get a boost.
Eagle almost had it, but Revali snatched it in his beak and aimed at the large target, shooting it perfectly.
"Bullseye!" Revali flew through it with a golden ring around him for a few seconds, and Eagle could only continue as he watched someone else go to steal his trophy. He landed on the cloud with the golden trophy, proud of what he had done.
"Way to go Revali!" Carla cheered as she flew over with all the parents. "I knew you could do it!" She rustled the feathers on his head, and he smiled. But that smile quickly died when he saw Eagle's father land next to his son.
"And what do you have to say about yourself, Eagle?" He asked sternly, folding his wings. Eagle looked away with guilt and his father scoffed as he looked back at the trophy. "All that training for nothing."
"Let's find a way to get this thing up, and-"
"No." Revali kept looking at Eagle before grabbing his golden arrow and flying over to him. "Hey!" He landed on the cloud with him and held out the arrow. Eagle looked at him confused.
"You already won," He spat. "That's not gonna do anything for either of us." He flew away, and his father gave Revali a look of disgrace before following his son.
"Revali," Carla landed next to him. "Are you okay?" Revali shook his head and turned back around.
"I can't do anything right for anyone, Carla!" He flew off, and his aunt persisted for him to stay. "Leave me alone!" With that, the young blue bird was gone, leaving his aunt to stay there not knowing what to do until Bizz and Bixx came over to congratulate her.
