What is Meant to be, Will Be

Chapter 5

As I was roaming the long halls of the hostpital I began to think, what if this one night stand is the one that is meant to be mine? What if he doesn't want to stay with his wife? Could we make it work.

"Meredith! I need you in trauma two!"

I ran into the trauma room and I saw a little boy with third degree burns all over his body. He was only nine years old and was in a house fire while he was staying with his friend. His first sleepover, granted I never had one, but was this really going to be the way it went? Dr. Arizona Robins was with the boy, trying to soothe him, but what do you say to a boy in that much pain?

"It will be alright Noah, I promise. Now just think about your parents. What were you going to do with them tomorrow?"

"Well I was going to give my mom a big hug. She is always so worried about me, and now I know why."

I smiled, he was trying to make jokes. Good sign.

"Well I can tell you that if you were my little boy, I would be so proud of how brave you are. You know that? You were really brave tonight."

"I guess I was wasn't I."

Dr. Robins and I continued to dress the burns, but before long I was paged to the OR. Arizona said she had it from there so I washed my hands and rushed up to the OR.

"I was paged."

I told the nurse. She looked extremely stressed out. I know I would be in I had ten OR's to run.

"Dr. Grey, right, Dr. Shepard paged you up. He said he needed to talk to you about some post-op instructions."

He couldn't find another resident. It had to be me. Why did he insist on tourting me like this? He has a wife, a family, for all I know he could be the father of six. But, as an intern we can't chose who we work with, so I went to the OR to get further instruction.

"Dr. Shepard you paged."

"Yes, Meredith, I need you to go check on all my post-ops, ask about pain and take vitals. I should be done soon so find me when your done. We need to talk about my wife."

"I will go check on the patients,"

I said. I left the OR, knowing I couldn't evade the topic forever. But dammit I could sure as hell try.

There was only one patient I was worried about and that was because they had serious pain and a fever. I don't know if Derek was going to take me seriously but I was going to try my best. I found him in the hallway by the OR nurse's station.

"Dr. Shepard room 302 still has serious pain and has a post-op fever. I ran tests for different infections but they haven't come back yet."

"Well I will go check on them once we finish talking. Meredith, I left my wife. We aren't divorced but we are seperated. Well, freshly seperated anyway."

"Stop. Just stop. I understand, I'm your one night stand. That's cool, whatever. But you don't need to sit here and explain to me that I'm not an affair. My mother had an affair, I know what one is."

"But your not just a one night stand. Meredith, I like you. I want to take you to dinner. The other night we just happened to be drinking and we all say alcohol makes us horny, which explains the sex. I had no intention of sleeping with you when I first came over."

"Thats a load of bullshit. A guy doesn't just come up to a girl in a bar and not want to get laid."

"Well if you would have listened to me any of the hundred times I told you, I'm not like other guys, I care."

"Oh, just not about your wife?"

As soon as he opened his mouth, there she was. Red hair, killer black heals, and a black cocktail dress. She had blue eyes and was wearing bright red lipstick.

"Derek,"

"Satan,"

"I'm going to go. You two have a lot to talk about."

I walked away, feeling both sets of eyes staring at me.

I went to find Cristina, of course she would have an amazing case. But no, I found her sitting on a cot in the basement charting.

"There are no good cases. I trolled for cases for hours. I can promise that you will never find a good case ever."

"We'll Cristina my neurosurgeon boyfriend has a wife."

"Oh shit."
