Please ignore the cover I'm aware it looks vaguely threatening
Hello! I'm Ember, and I used to LOVE oc reviews back in middle school. These things were like food to me. I read them obsessively. Then I had a crisis, and now I'm back! So, what makes me qualified to review your OCs?
I'm gonna be honest with you: absolutely nothing. I'm not a professional writer or editor. I'm just some dude on the internet.
But! I do have *checks notes* seven (???) years of experience with creating ocs. And while I'm not a published author, I am a writer! I write funny little stories about my funny little ocs. So absolutely zero claims of expertise, but I know a little bit about what I'm doing? Maybe? So. I'm older now, and here with a new perspective. This will be a bit different from a normal OC review book. Here, I'll just make a list exposing how I'm gonna approach this —
- I won't crucify you for writing a mary sue
- OKOK before people start trying to burn me at the stake, I think the greatest flaw a character can have is being uninteresting. I think that even a character that seems like a Mary Sue can be fun to read about in the right circumstances. I'll not be focusing as much on whether your oc is "overpowered." Instead, I'll mostly be suggesting ways to add depth/nuance to your character.
- (also I think you should write whatever you want to write!!! go ahead, make that powerful and loved self-insert for your favorite piece of media!!! there's no reason not to!!!! but that's not super relevant here, since this is an oc review book)
- I'll take OCs from any fandom, as well as entirely original characters. I'm most familiar with warrior cats/wings of fire ocs, but I'm willing to do research on any piece of media
- I LOVE exploring the nuances of characters. I find it really fun to dive deep into a character's motivations and understand why they do what they do. This will probably show!
- I'd be willing to act as something of a sensitivity reader as well! Obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I'm happy to help workshop/suggest how to portray certain things. Specifically, bisexuality, mental illness (anxiety, depression, OCD, eating disorders, self-harm, and suicide), and chronic pain. If you'd like me to critique your portrayal of any of these things, PLEASE specify in your form. I won't go around telling people they're portraying these things wrong without being asked — for all I know, they're writing about their lives experience
- if your character likes to be dramatic/theatrical you get an extra point from me. yes i have biases. no i won't apologize for them /hj
- I'll be nice about this. I'm not here to tear your character apart. This is constructive criticism, not a death sentence. Please don't be afraid to reach out!! I don't bite! If you have any questions about something I've said in your review, please feel free to let me know :)
