Wynter

Jack bites back a smile, taking another long sip of wine from his cup.
"Come with me. I want to show you something"
He pushed out his chair and stood, walking over to my side.

I wanted to look up at him, but I couldn't. He pulled out my chair before helping me up, looping my arm through his.

"Did you ever wonder why Nick picked you?" He said, still holding his head up high.

It was a question I had been asking myself. I knew I was the one who summoned Nick on Christmas Day, but why would he  want to pretend to marry me? Desperation? I mean, I was a human after all.

Jack lead me down a beautifully decorated hallway. Pictures and portraits of men and women lined the path. They were each in elegant attire. Curiosity struck me and my mind ran wild imagining potential stories of the people on the wall.

We finally stopped in front of a large woven tapestry. It's vastness was overwhelming but it's colors captivating.

"See the man in blue at the top?" He pointed.

I nodded.

"My great great great great grandfather" he said. "And that man?" He pointed to a man in a soft red hat and gown. "Nick Claus Sr. Nick's great great great grandfather.
Once upon a time, there was no Christmas. There was no reindeers or sleigh bells. There were only two friends. Best friends. Jack and Nick."

He paused, looking down at me. I matched his gaze and nodded, coaxing him to continue on.
"Jack went to earth one day and met what we call here "humans". Entities who possess no powers or magical energies. My grandfather saw how the suffered. With no magic, death was inevitable and sickness anticipated. My great grandfather wanted to offer these humans some sort of hope and joy. For one year, he wanted humans to forget their bleak existence. So he made up a holiday."

I hummed, my head still tilted up. I was eager to learn more. I studied the laws and by laws of the Pole. I knew every entity, every rule, but never had I come upon this side of history.

"It was there my grandfather met my grandmother and started the Frost line. We were a happy klan. We delivered toys and treats to each boy and girl on earth. All was well until Nick Claus sr found out what his best friend had been doing. He didn't approve of mixing magic and mortals. My grandfather never cared about that."

I shiver. I did not know whether it was from the cold or Jack's tone when he said humans.
"It was never supposed to called Christmas. The Claus family saw the profit and greed.
So there was a war. The Great War of Poles. North va South. You can probably tell who won" he smiled lazily, staring into my eyes.

I try to hide my smile.

"Nick Claus won. Our family's title was gone."

"I didn't know this..." I try to sound sympathetic. I wondered why Nick hadn't told me this side of history.

"I admit. Nick and I were sworn enemies. I have done my fair share of mayhem and discourse, but for the Claus family to paint me as the villain?" He let out a sarcastic chuckle.

"The road in their coats symbolize the bloodshed of my family. Nick Claus killed my great grandfather. His best friend"

"Jack. I'm sorry" I press a hand against his shoulder. He tenses up, looking at my knuckles. "But Nick is not like that. He would never ...maybe his father but not Nick. Surely, if you two talk, we can work something out and—"

"But that's the thing Wynter." He turns towards me and pulls my palm into his, intertwining our fingers against one another.
"I am not interested in mending the feud. What I am interested in, is you"

"Jack. I am engaged"

"I stand here weakened by a beautiful woman incarnate."

"Jack I'm flattered but—"

"You will be mine Wynter." He said, pulling me in his arms. The way he said it made my body quiver. There was a bold assurance about him. It was scary.

"That's a bit pretentious don't you think?"

"Pretentious? Or Confidant?" he hums, pushing a curl from my face.

I needed to get out of here and fast but I knew Jack would never let me free. Nick would have to rescue me...but how would he know I was here?

"I think I'm going to head upstairs to sleep." I pretend to yawn and pull away from his warmth.

"Nah ah ah." He says. Snapping two fingers. Instantly I froze. He walked over and stepped to face me.

"You lying son of a b—"

"Ah ah. It's not cute for a future Queen to curse" he grabs my jaw and smiles. His bright blue eyes began to glow with magic.
He snaps again and I fall into his arms.

"So you're really holding me hostage?"

"Now that you've said it aloud? That's a wonderful idea!" He snaps and my arms shoot around his neck. It was like I was under his spell.

"It was the soup?"

"Shhhh shhh. Let's not worry about the past. It's way past your bedtime" he smirked, kissing my cheek softly.

The last thing I remembered was the eerie glow in his eyes.
