I gather the lower fabric of my slightly torn maid like dress as I make my way down the stairs to the hall to grab my next bucket of water.
"That girl is a trouble maker!" I hear one of the sisters yell so curiously I make my way to the door to ease drop.
"She's doing the best with what she's been given" sister Teresa says back.
They were talking about me again. Ugh. I didn't think I was that bad. I just spoke my opinion whenever and wherever and I wasn't afraid to get aggressive so what? They were bad always getting us to do maid work. They both storm out so I quickly hide behind the door.
Sister Nicolette turns towards the main doors and throws them both open turning the corner to the smoke section. I look over to see a small portion was still left open.
I couldn't believe it. Was this my opportunity to leave. Well if it was I wasn't gonna waste a second of it just to get caught I had to make my best effort of course.
I drop the bucket and grab the hem of my skirt and dash through the doors. I hear my name get yelled but I didn't turn I just ran faster through the streets of New York one thing on my mind my brother.
As I ran I bump in to a old couple nearly knocking the woman over.
"I am so very sorry. Umm do you mind tellin me wherabouts I can find the newsies"
"Yes darling they're just down there past the paper press" I wasn't expecting her to be so kind after I nearly knocked her off her feet
"They steal something from ya?" I did expect that from the man tho.
"You could say that. Hava lovely day there folks." I wave them off as I run the way they told me to find a giant group of boys dancing around, laughing, rolling dice, having fun. Definitely wasn't used to seeing this stuff.
"You the newsies?" I ask some boy with a cowboy hat on his back and a red bandana.
"Yeah whos is yous pretty goil?" I scoff slightly but feeling slightly flattered.
"Josephine. Is my brother here?" I wanted to find him immediately. Who could blame me I haven't seen the kid in 3 years since our mom ran.
"Whos your brotha?" Then a few more kids join his side. One with a crutch, one with short dark haired one, and one very young boy about 8 stood in front of him.
"Nick Meyers? I call him mush" why were more and more people piling up? All I wanted was my brother then to find somewhere to live.
"Yo mush. Get ova here you gotta visitor." The one with dark brown hair yelled.
Soon enough my brother came running. God he got big. He sees me and his face lights up as he runs to me engulfing me in a hug. He was taller then me now and buffer, his hair was longer and more curly.
"My god you outta turn into dad." I say placing my hand in the hair that was sticking out of his hat.
"I missed ya sis." He says hugging me again tightly.
"I ain't leavin this time aight. I'm here with you mush." I say kissing his forehead like I used to do.
"Nice reunion here but mind introducin us to this doll." A tall blonde one with an eye patch said this time.
"Newsies Josephine. Josephine newsies. This is my sis." He sounded to happy to be saying that and that's all that mattered to me.
"Nice meetin you all but I ought a find a place to stay."
"No way sis you can stay here. Huh fellas?" I didn't want to intrude but I didn't have any better place.
"First girl newsie that oughta get us in the pape." The cowboy hat guy shakes my hand and everyone bursts into cheers. Then I'm dragged my multiple hands and everyone starts introducing themselves. This oughta be a long day.
