"Tasha....Hey...", Dahlia shot up from her seat and caught Tasha as she fell unconscious from her chair.
Arni and Kiara were frozen in their seats for a couple seconds before they came forth helping Tasha up on her chair.
Some waiters roaming on the floor and a few patrons from other tables came rushing towards the friends.
"Here", a waiter brought a glass of water.
A man from the crowd took the glass from his hand and commanded in a grainy, loud voice, "I'm a doctor. Please let me check her. everyone please give her some space. It's too crowded here", as he sprinkled some water on Tasha's face.
The crowd surrounding the girls dispersed a little. Dahlia was standing behind Tasha's chair holding her protectively by her shoulder. Arni holding one of Tasha's hands in a tight grip. The man in coat checked Tasha's pulse, her eyes and sprinkled some more water on her face as Arni and Kiara rubbed her hands on his instruction.
The man put the glass on table and pressed Tasha's temples with her fingers lightly before Tasha finally moved. Her eyes fluttered open as she gasped for breath.
"It's okay...okay...Breathe easy", the doctor instructed as Tasha started coughing. Dahlia rubbed her back and shushed her.
"Is she okay doctor?", Kiara asked concerned as Tasha's breathing started stabilizing.
"Absolutely. It's natural for women as young as her to experience nausea during the first trimester of pregnancy", the doctor squinted his brows a little as he inspected Tasha. The girl looked barely adult, too young to be bearing a child if not for an accidental, unprotected hook-up.
"The first what?", Arni almost shouted, her eyes widening into saucers as she looked towards the doctor baffled. The doctor's brows tightly knitted together as his questioning eyes went from Tasha's face to each of her friends.
Dahlia had always been the fastest and the most level-headed one in cases of getting a hint or handling a situation. She quickly intervened in a fake cherry voice.
"But of course. Actually we are not really used to seeing her like this. Thank you for your help doctor. Thanks everybody", Dahlia turned towards the crowd that had gathered around them, "Sorry about the disturbance everyone. We should be going now."
Arni picked up the hint and joined, "Let's get you home girl", as she gently held Tasha by her hand ushering her to move.
Tasha who was equally baffled as her friends got up from her seat with Arni's help and thanked the doctor in a meek voice before her friends guided her out of the parlour.
"Explain", Dahlia shot Tasha a baffled glance as the friends huddled together under a chestnut tree a street down from the cafe. Tasha borrowed a painkiller from Dahlia to ease the stomach cramps of period that morning. Dahlia was obviously the most confused one at the sudden announcement of pregnancy.
"I....I don't understand", Tasha looked extremely pale. She was still not completely over the waves of nausea that suddenly took her down inside the cafe. A declaration of pregnancy? She was still trying to grasp the situation.
"You are dating a woman, right?", Kiara gave Tasha a questioning look.
"I am...", Tasha hesitantly replied. She knew Satyavati, even as a woman, was still able to impregnate her. But the fact that she was on contraceptives and most importantly on her second day of periods didn't help her cope up with the facts either.
"I think the doctor mistook something", Arni said after an awkward pause, "You are menstruating. That should be the end of discussion."
Arni's voice was not confident. She didn't want to believe what the man in the parlor said but she couldn't wrap her head around the fact that Tasha was not denying the declaration outright.
"Yeah. I think it does end the discussion", Dahlia concluded confidently as she held Tasha close, "The only thing to worry about here is your health. How about we go to a clinic and get you properly checked? You don't look good."
"It's fine guys", Tasha rubbed the bridge of her nose and conjured as much strength as she could before she spoke again, "I think it's my haemoglobin acting up again."
A low level of haemoglobin was the only cause Tasha could think of her fatigue. She had been feeling a little nauseous, a little too tired lately. It was the same when her haemoglobin dropped significantly low a couple years ago. Satyavati got her checked and put her on a strict diet and medicines during that time.
"Girl...you scared us", Kiara slapped Tasha gently before pulling her into a tight hug.
"But you shouldn't be guessing. You need a proper checkup", Dahlia said concerned.
"I will book an appointment of my house physician today. It's probably nothing some change of diet and iron capsules can't fix", Tasha smiled at her friends.
"Promise?", Dahlia eyed Tasha.
"Promise", Tasha nodded.
Her friends booked her a cab home and waved her goodbye. Tasha pulled her phone out of her bag and unlocked the screen. Her first instinct during every time she felt sick since she was twelve was to call Satyavati.
But just as her finger scrolled down to Satyavati's number in her call list she stopped. That woman already had a lot on her plate to deal with. her college, her ever expanding fields of work in the NGO, her Dojo. What was the point of bothering her with something that Tasha could fix herself?
Tasha locked her phone screen and leaned on the seat. All she needed was a change of diet and medicines she already knew and everything would be alright. She sighed. She was no longer a twelve year old student. She could handle a petty health issue without making Satyavati worry. Not overburdening Satyavati would be the right thing to do as a fiancee!
