Fifteen minutes after the sky went completely dark Koba called the group to a stop the weight of not knowing what had happened to the others felt like a thousand tons of water were balanced on his shoulders a look at Rocket told him the virtually bald chimp was feeling the same "should we turn back Caesar could be in trouble" Rocket signed concern was stuck on his face like a mask of glue as Koba followed Rockets signs in the near darkness "we can't the police are still looking for us if they see you you'll be killed on sight" Beth told them sadly "so what are we supposed to do go back to the others or wait for Maurice and Caesar here" Cornelia asked her hands shaking from the fear of hearing the gunshots Koba was silent for a moment before he signed a suggestion that surprised even himself
"Humans you and Cornelia will take the food to the troop me and Rocket will go back and find the others" he signed firmly and made sure to keep his single clear eye on their weapons which they'd kept drawn since Caesar had left them the two human women looked shocked at his command and one of them shook her head at him "you can't be serious if the police catch you they won't think twice I've been shot at before and I can promise you it ain't fun" Beth protested Koba glared at her and snarled quietly before raising his hands "don't pretend you care for us it's not like you have a better suggestion now go before it gets any darker" Koba ordered again the woman shook her head at him then surprised him by extending her hand that held her semi automatic
"How much further till we reach the others" a voice called out from the darkness as Koba hesitantly took the woman's weapon "Anvil" Becky said at once as she tightened her grip on Trish's baby "oh shit I forgot they were surrounding the woods" Beth exclaimed as Koba pushed her in front of him like a shield "what do we do" Becky asked as Sofia began crying sensing the fear of the adults around her "the baby they must be up ahead" the voice said it was then that Cornelia recognised who the voice belonged to "shut that thing up before it gets us killed" Rocket demanded as Cornelia came forward and gently took the child "the trees quick" she signed pushing her comrades out of the path of the approaching people
Reaching the woods Caesar was irritated to see that he had left a trail of blood and his hand had paled beneath his fur to make matters worse he could no longer move his fingers which lead him to guess he had destroyed his nerves and possibly the ligaments in his hand it also concerned him that he could see straight through the hole the bullet had left "where's Caesar you think he made it out" he heard his mother ask from up ahead relieved to hear her Voice Caesar called out to them and pressed the palm of his injured hand to his chest a few seconds later he sighed with relief as he took his mother in his arms and held her close gritting his teeth against the pain in his hand
"thank god your safe I was so worried" she sobbed as she buried her face in his shoulder "I am ok" he said aloud his unnatural sounding voice made her freeze in terror for a moment before pulling away to look him in the eye "Come we must find the others" Caesar said determined to hide his pain as she shot his hands a suspicious look She shook her head at him but carried on anyway saying nothing
Ten minutes later
Driven by her child's cry's Trish didn't notice when they entered the clearing the rest of the group had stopped in and she would have passed straight through obliviously had Rocket not launched himself from the trees and knocked her to the ground "wait stop it's me it's Trish" she shouted as Rocket seized her by the shirt he didn't seem convinced until Caesar shoved him away and stood over him while Maurice helped her to her feet and rattled her cuffs that had restrained her hands behind her back "are you three alright what happened" Becky asked as they came out from hiding "we're fine I was almost arrested" Trish said as Beth bent to free her from the cuffs skilfully using a hair pin "Caesar your bleeding look at your hand" Cornelia signed gently rocking the baby Caesar shook his head frantically and scowled at her "it's nothing I'm fine" he whispered aloud Cornelia wasn't convinced and took his injured hand in hers
Cornelia's eyes widened in horror at her friends injury she held his hand tighter as the blood pooled in her palm "I will be fine it's nothing" Caesar insisted stroking the side of her face he breathed sharply when the muffled sound of a lock clicking broke the silence "I got it" Beth exclaimed happily as Trish shook off the cuffs and rubbed her wrists "thank you those were starting to hurt" Trish commented as she picked up the closest bags of food "which way to the rest of the troop" Becky asked as they started moving ignoring the concerned looks of his friends as Cornelia pointed out his injury to Rocket and Maurice Caesar ambled forward and took the lead "this way stay close woods dangerous in the dark" Caesar grunted The three humans exchanged worried looks as they picked up on the fact Caesar had abandoned signing completely
Twenty five minutes later
The loud calls of a scout signalled their arrival at the rest of the troop as Caesar began to feel faint from how much blood he had lost desperately needing a moment to recover he ordered Rocket and Koba to hand out the food while he sought restbite on the ground excitement spread through the group as apes began filling starved bellies and rejoicing in the brief moment of peace Caesar had afforded them "Caesar show me your hand" Trish demanded as she sat beside him with the baby ashamed he turned his back to her and tucked his hand out of sight "hey don't give me that let me help you if it gets infected you'll be in an even worse state" she insisted placing a comforting hand on his shoulder Caesar tensed and looked out over his troop a small smile crept onto his face as he watched the apes he had freed celebrating "we did it" Maurice signed with a grin as he came over and offered his leader a piece of fruit Caesar grinned thankfully and reached out with his injured hand
"Jesus Christ did you get shot" Trish asked too loud Caesar shot her a stern glare warning her to shut up "it's nothing just a scratch" Caesar insisted hiding his hand from her again Trish scowled at him and reached out for his hand "Caesar don't lie to me" she said sharply Caesar rolled his eyes at her and took another bite of fruit before finally giving up his hand Trish cleared her throat and turned on the torch on her phone "Jesus Christ I can see the bone your lucky it missed your knuckle fortunately the bullet went straight through will you let me clean it so it doesn't get infected" Trish asked him kindly Caesar rolled his eyes and shrugged "thank you here can you hold her for me so I don't wake her" Trish asked holding her child out to Maurice the gentle orang hesitated he had only ever seen human children through iron bars the first time in the circus and the last the day he arrived in the primate shelter he had never held one and had no idea how to do so without harming her
"Here it's easy you just support her head and hold your hand under her back just like this" she explained demonstrating herself Maurice gulped nervously and placed his fruit on the ground before holding his arms out with an air of faked confidence Caesar and Trish both smiled assuringly as Maurice gently took the child in his large hands taking extra care to support the child's head as he'd been told "ok this might sting a little I'll be gentle you ready" Trish asked as she grabbed a bottle of water Caesar braced himself for the searing pain that always seemed to happen whenever his mother said something was going to sting a bit to his relieved surprise though he felt nothing remotely close to pain until the cap of the bottle caught on his blood matted fur pulling on the skin beneath it Caesar growled in pain and pulled his hand away slightly "I don't have anything to stitch it up with right now so I'll just have to bandage it will you leave it on after" Trish asked him sweetly Caesar huffed as much as he loved the woman taking care of him for maybe the last time for a while he felt embarrassed that he had resorted to asking for her help "yes" he grunted aloud Seeing her smile made him feel even more conflicted about weather he had done the right thing a few minutes later the bandage was completed and the three of them had gone back to watching over the ranks
"Still can't believe this is happening we're really free" Maurice asked as he finished his third peice of fruit Trish grinned proudly and nodded at him "I know right you wouldn't believe you've been out here two weeks it's been so strange without you guys in the city" Trish said happily as she switched between the two apes at her side and the hundreds of others that covered the area before them "the start of a long life of freedom I can't thank you enough for your help" Caesar signed taking his mother under his arm Trish sighed happily and rested her head on his chest contentment filled the air as the stolen food was slowly devoured
