Mark kept watching their surroundings as they followed the blood trail up hill he was desperately praying this wasn't leading them to where Caesar and his troop were hiding his hands were aching from the cuffs and he wondered if Jordon or any of the others had started looking for him yet "I never caught your name" a female voice asked from behind his shoulder Mark turned around and huffed wishing he was home holding his baby "Mark" Mark replied bluntly "I'm Erica" the woman replied Mark nodded but didn't say anything and turned around following the blood trail
"Garrison sir we found the car from last night there's no sign of the guy or the apes" a mercenary who had been scouting moments before announced Mark looked up confused and tried to stop from jumping to conclusions "car what car" Mark asked as the blood trail got bigger "that's above your pay grade call in the choppers move the car" Garrison said raising his voice and snapping a finger at Mark Mark shook his head and kept walking following the trail "do you think the ape we're following is still alive" Erica asked him in a quiet voice Mark shook his hands and dropped them to his hips "if they are it won't be for much longer I just hope it's not Caesar that got shot" Mark said looking up at the trees almost hoping to see his adoptive son watching them
"Caesar who's that" Erica asked Mark shook his head and looked to the right of them the bush was close to over grown but a glance in the very tops of the trees told him they weren't alone a slight smile came to his face when he remembered Trish describing the expression on Caesar's face when Sofia was born "it's up here we found it" a second scout called from up ahead Mark and Erica exchanged anxious looks as they started running it wasn't long before they found the body Erica gasped and started crying before she turned away from the trees Caesar turned away from sight of the humans the deceased chimps glassy eyes were seered into his memory "what are those cages on his hands" Rocket signed pointing at Marks hands as the human got in between a woman and one of the men as a shouting match ensued between them
Caesar looked back and noticed that Marks hands were completely covered by the restraints Caesar shook his head "no this is bullshit I didn't sign up for this I was told we were containing them nobody ever said anything about murder" Erica bellowed Mark frowned and stepped back "Erica stop it I get your mad believe me I am to but exercising your vocal cords is not going to change anything it will not bring this chimp back and it certainly won't stop these bastards from killing more apes so calm down take a deep breath and let's keep looking cause the sooner we waste our time the sooner we get back to camp and the sooner I can get these bastard handcuffs off" Mark insisted firmly Erica looked from Mark to Garrison and then took a step away and raised her hands
"these humans are strange" Rocket commented from their hold in the trees Caesar agreed and narrowed his eyes at his human father in all his years of knowing the man Caesar knew him well enough to know when something was off the way Mark was acting around the others he almost seemed to be playing peacekeeper as well as informant answers were needed and from the look of the humans there was no telling what they were capable of "we need to get back to the others warn them that the humans have an insider" Caesar signed regretfully Rocket only understood a few words of what Caesar was saying but he grasped the dire consequences that the humans posed
Fifteen minutes later
Jordon paced as he and Maurice argued back and forth about him getting home "Caesar told you to stay till he returned and besides your in no condition to walk you can barely sign" Maurice insisted Jordon groaned loudly this orangutan was one of the most stubborn people he'd ever met "I'm Fine Maurice I appreciate the concern I really do but I need to go home cause my girlfriend and sister are on their own right now with a new baby we have no idea where Mark is and right now we have as much a target on our backs as you if Anvil recognised me last night it's a matter of time before they go after the others" Jordon said firmly he had tried signing as he spoke but after hitting his head he found his coordination was a little off
