"Garrison Becky see what you can do to slow the fire we'll move the apes to higher ground" Mark stated as Trish Beth and Jordon dropped into the midst of the apes less than a minute later Jordon climbed back into the chopper red faced and breathless "we have a big problem Caesars missing he took a handful of apes and went to help the wounded" Mark and Garrison exchanged resigned looks before Garrison asked the obvious question that had formed an elephant in the back "alright so where is he" silent Jordon cocked his head to the midst of the raging fire beneath them
Mark looked at his brother and shook his head a sarcastic smile appeared on his face as he understood what they now had do to "of course he is my god we're going to get ourselves killed Garrison turn us around take us straight into the line of fire" Mark exclaimed loudly Jordon smiled and sent their arsenal down to the others the last thing they needed was a chain reaction blowing them to bits "been nice knowing you jackass" Jordon cheered as Garrison reluctantly pulled back and headed straight into the growing wall of fire
down on the ground Rocket and Maurice were happy to step aside and let the humans take control the looming fear that they had reached the end of the line subsided as the hundred plus apes ran for their lives as a group The vinegar smelling fumes overwhelmed them as they got closer and closer to the wall of gas that stood between them and a chance of seeing tomorrow cries of pain and terror filled the air as they began to break through and apes and humans alike felt the effects of the anvil weapons
"fuck I can't see anything this gas is really strong" Beth exclaimed as they pushed closer and closer to the edge "stay together we're almost through" Trish called out as she all but dragged her allies through a hail of blinding pain the sound of her daughters agonised cries ate away at her determination as they broke through and felt clear air on their faces "we made it just a little further the further we can get the better" Trish consoled as they ran blindly up hill toward the North
The heat that had consumed the helicopter was becoming unbearable as Garrison flew through the burning trees the smoke threatened to destroy their lungs when they finally found who they were looking for a group of roughly 45 apes were lying still in a waist deep stream singed fur and battered bodies grouped together as their collective strength failed them Gorillas chimps and orangutans struggled to breathe as they collapsed in the water
"get us in close we'll load as many as we can into the chopper and carry the rest out on foot" Mark and Jordon agreed Garrison however spoke up in prominent disagreement "this is suicide there's too much smoke we should leave them and head for higher ground" as soon as the words were heard by the others Garrison knew he'd said the wrong thing Mark pointed it out a few seconds later by demanding that he stay behind the controls and follow orders like he was supposed to
as they hovered over the stream the heat became even worse until it began to feel like the inside of an oven "whatever happens make sure Caesar makes it out" Mark said to the others as they landed in the water the apes were too exhausted to respond as Mark and Jordon dragged the first few out and Becky helped them into the helicopter most of the apes held either hostile desperate or resigned expressions as they boarded the chopper "we can't take many more any sign of Caesar yet" Garrison asked as Becky dragged a drugged gorilla onto the back of the heli "not yet but their still looking get these guys out of here and back with the others if there's still a chance then come back for us" Becky replied as she backed away from the machine
Garrison nodded dutifully and pulled up before flying back in front of the moving fire ring it was getting harder and harder to see and breathe as the heat combined with the smoke overwhelmed Mark and Jordon's bodies they coughed and wheezed as they dragged body after body from the stream Caesar had had the right idea when he sought refuge in the water but unfortunately it just wasn't deep enough the two men were about to call it quits when they finally came across a gigantic silverback that had hunched itself over several chimps
