When I got outside I got on my bike and headed to school. On my way I had some thinking time. There wasn't a whole lot to think about. Well, there was but I don't want to depress myself. Currently I am a Sophomore at a high school in Seattle. I have no friends, I am an orphan, and I'm very lonely. Ok, now I'm depressed.
As I approached the school, I heard the sound of students laughing echoing off the tall apartment buildings just across the street from the school. I would guess that if I weren't socially rejected I would enjoy this sound. But I am not accepted.

"Don't let them get to you," I reminded myself as I pedaled across the road and onto school grounds, preparing myself for the constant reminder of how alone I am.

"Hey Jack, why don't you just stay home? Your college mama will take care of you."

Why do they have to insult the only family I have left? Why can't they just leave me alone?

I put my bike on the bike rack and quickly made my way inside. I could hear their laughter following me into the school. It was like a dog was chasing me, with a lot of endurance and a lot of strength.

I was putting my thing in my locker when I heard a voice call my name.

"Jack!" I turned around to see Brandon, our friendly neighborhood school bully. "You haven't payed up today."

"I don't have any money today Brandon," I knew this wouldn't get him off my back, but it was worth a shot.

"Then your gonna have to find some other way. When you go home with a black eye and a bloody lip, you can tell your college mommy that she better give you some money tomorrow."

As Brandon brought his first back and I got ready for the pain that I knew all too well.

"Hey! Why don't you go pick on someone your own size?"

"Or what?" Brandon said as you turned to see who had spoken.

"Or this!"

In a fraction of a second, a fist connected with Brandon's face. He immediately fell to the ground, motionless. And there was a boy I had never seen before standing over him.

"You ok?" The boy asked.

"Who... Who are you?" That was all I could say. He had just saved me from a painful beating.

"A friend," he said as he turned and walked away. I couldn't make out his face very well due to the fact the I was still stunned, and when my vision cleared, he was gone.

At the time I didn't know who this boy was, but I would know soon enough.
