Jim was sitting on the rigging, his ankles crossed one another as he fiddled with a piece of rope as he looked out at the starry sky. Jim's mind was racing a mile a minute, rethinking everything he had done in the last 24 hours, or the past 16 years of his life. Silver walked on the deck and took out his pipe, he used his mechanic arm to light it before looking around the ship.
That's when his eyes landed on his cabin boy sitting in rigging, he remembered the first time he saw Jim on the rigging. Silver could remember the excited smile on his face how the boy looked at everything in awe and curiosity, but as Silver looked at his cabin boy now all he could see was darkness. Silver glanced around to see if there were any of his crew members around, when he saw none he decided to walk over to the cabin boy.
Silver leaned against the railing with both arms as he studied his smoking pipe before looking up at Jim. Jim knew that the cyborg was there but decided to ignore him, he continued to fiddle with the rope instead. Jim hoped that the cyborg would take the hint to stay quiet or leave. The cyborg looked away from Jim as he said thoughtfully while inspecting his pipe once more.
"It wasn't your fault, you know."
Jim let out a long tired sigh as he glared remorsefully at the starry sky. He wrapped the rope around his middle finger and pointer finger and continued to hope that Silver would just leave him alone so he could sit here in regret. Silver looked up once more to Jim when he didn't get a response from the boy, he then gestured one arm to the barracks as he told the boy.
"Why, half the crew would be spinning in the black abyss if not for...."
Jim winced slightly when he heard the praise from his mentor, he angrily grew the rope off the ship as he jumped off the rigging and onto the railing. He held onto the rigging to keep it from falling off as he shouted angrily at Silver.
"Look! Don't you get it!"
Jim jumped off the railing and pointed to his chest as he paused in front of the cyborg and yelled.
"I screwed up! I mean for two seconds I thought that maybe I could do something right but...." Jim trailed off as he groaned and rubbed his face angrily with both hands as the look of pure heartbreak on Annie's face appeared in his mind.
"I thought that I could do something right with her....ugh!" Jim groaned as he turned his back on Silver and leaned up against the mast as he ran a hand through his hair he let out a sigh and said his voice breaking. "Just forget it, forget it."
Jim rubbed a couple of stray tears that slipped from his cheek. Silver frowned as he watched the strong-headed cabin boy he's come to learn and care for finally break and it's not even by his doing. Silver seemed to hesitate as he reached a hand to Jim but he knew the boy needed to hear this especially right now.
Silver placed his hand on the boy's shoulder and turned him around, and when he got the attention of the boy he gave him a warm smile as he pointed his pipe at the boy as he said.
"Now you listen to me James Hawkins, you got the makings of greatness in ya. But ya got to take the helm and chart your own course and stick to it, no matter the squalls."
Jim stared up at the cyborg with tears coming into his eyes, because for once someone was actually telling him he could be something more than what people saw him as. Silver saw that Jim was listening intently to what he was saying and went on.
"And when the time comes and you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails and show 'em what you're made of."
Silver paused and gave a small smile at the boy before opening his arms out as he closed his eyes, imagining Jim doing amazing things he never could've done. He couldn't help but let out a soft chuckle as he pictured Annie by his side as he said.
