A month had passed since the chicken fiasco that only the two teenagers aboard the ship, they often snuck away from their mentors when they had free time to hang out with one another. At the moment they were stopped at a port and they were exploring the streets of Vala, they were joking around and having a good time just running through the streets with happiness.

"We always talk about my family, why not talk about yours?" Jim suggested as he gave the girl a warm smile.

Jim paused when he saw that Annie froze at the mention of her family, he hesitantly put a hand on her shoulder catching her eye as he questioned her so softly.

"Your parents weren't great?"

Annie gave Jim a small sad smile as she rested her hand on top of his as she said softly.

"I was in the foster system actually."

"Oh I'm sorry I didn't know that." Jim said with a saddened look on his face.

He squeezed Annie's shoulder in sympathy and she just smiled back at him,

Annie grabbed Jim's hand off her shoulder and they began walking through the streets together.

"It's fine, it's not something I really advertise." Annie joked with a small smile, as she looked at the ground. "All I could find on my parents death was that it was from pirates, I guess one of the pirates didn't want to harm a kid so they left me where the Royal Navy could find me. They immediately put me into the foster system after finding out I had no living relatives"

"So pirates killed your parents? Why?" Jim questioned the girl.

"My parents were researching something. That's everything the Royal Navy could tell me." Annie said as she shrugged her shoulders, fiddling with the ring on her finger. "All I have left is my mother's ring and my father's gun and a story I assume they read to me every night. Flint's Trove."

Jim couldn't help but smile at that, she was opening up to him and even now they had a connection. The book based on Flint.

"No wonder why I liked you from the start, you're a Flint fan aren't you." Jim teased as he nudged the girl's shoulder.

"Guilty as charged." Annie said with a guilty smile as she raised her wrist up towards Jim. "Take me in, soldier, a cadet in the royal navy likes a pirate. It's a crime!"

They both chuckled before falling into silence, Jim had to know how she got into the Installer Academy and how she met Amelia and Arrow.

"So what happened after that?"

"I was moved from foster home to foster home, I mean some of them were amazing but there were just too many kids in the house for them to take care of. The other foster homes were just horrible."

"Horrible how?"

"Well some of them taught me how to pickpocket, others thought that the foster kids and I should get a job when we weren't even old enough." Annie scoffed out with a roll of her eyes. "That's how I met the Captain and Mr. Arrow ya know."

"Wanna tell me."

"Let's just say I pickpocketed them and they found out. They offered me a second chance and I took it, Captain Amelia adopted me and Mr. Arrow is my godfather." Annie said as she smiled softly at the mention of the positive impact they had on her life. "I've been trying to prove myself that I'm worthy of a second chance ever since."

"That's amazing, I didn't realize the Captain had a heart." Jim joked but was serious at the same time as they started walking towards the Inn some of the crew was staying in.
