"Cyrus?"
Please
"Are you listening?"
Don't leave her alone
"Please, I know this is a difficult time but I need your full attention"
Promise me
But-
Promise me
I promise
"Mr. Amari?" The woman repeated, finally pulling Cyrus out of his daze. "You are the father, correct?"
"Yes," his groggy voice forced out the words. The world was spinning.
"I need you to fill out this paperwork... If you have any questions please let me know. And if needed, I can help you get in contact with someone to help with the um... Bills" The woman gave a hesitant once over to Cyrus. She wasn't wrong about him being broke. But he didn't have time to feel insulted. He didn't have the energy-
Fuck
He could see the doctor moving into the waiting room where his and Evelyn's families waited patiently. Evelyn's mom and her uncle sat in awkward silence with Cyrus' mother up until the news was broken. Cyrus could still hear their muffled voices even through the thick doors. He could hear the doctor explaining everything. The silence that followed and the screaming.
The heartbroken sobs of a childless mother.
The screams. The pleads to every God ever created. The pain in her voice and sobs echoed down the hallways and only made Cyrus's hands shake more.
He was numb.
He was completely numb.
He lost the love of his life.
He might lose his daughter too... It might just be a good thing... She killed Evelyn-
No, she didn't
Evelyn knew the risks
It was Evelyn's choice
She's a baby... She's done no wrong
You wouldn't be able to handle it if you lost Aisha too...
Cyrus swallowed his fear and stared down at the paperwork, the pen shaking in his hand and a tear rolling down his cheek.
Allaah please show mercy
He was still staring down at the paper, not a single thought comprehending entirely when the door was forced open and Evelyn's mother, Rose, came into the room fuming. Cyrus braced himself for exactly what he deserved.
