- continuing from previous entry –

Well, I was welcomed with some kind of party thing going on. Apparently everyone’s been getting everything ready and had been hiding for the last half hour and yelled ‘surprise!’ when I walked in. I have to say, I nearly had a heart attack. After I got over the shock of it all, I could hear why they were having this party for me.

Everyone seems to be under the impression that I acted like a real champion, refusing to abandon Jess, and they seem to have found out that I’m Felore Moonray’s heir (I guess a secret can’t be kept in this place). They all wanted to see the Dragon Mark on my neck, so I was sort of forced to lift my hair and show them. For some reason, the strange pattern at the dragon’s bottom had gone all the way down my spine, which only impressed my fellow students more. I partied with them a bit (eating as many Strawberry Snaps and Chocolate Chip cookies as humanly possible) before wanting to go through the magic door they’ve explained to me how to use. You’re supposed to say your full name and year, and the door works almost like an elevator, moving your room up to the front of the door. I've been told that up to two people may share a room, and somehow Professor Darthorion knew who I was going to choose, so he had Jess’s stuff already brought up for me.

Before I could go up to my room, however, Mekisha blocked the way. She’d been sitting in a corner, watching me. Here’s what happened.

"Liz, I’m so glad you’re all right!" she’d said, so excitedly, but I just cut to the chase.

"Mekisha, drop it, all right? Yes, I’m fine, but I would have been better if you were in the hospital with us. You left us there. Whether you went for help or not, we could have died, and we almost did. Stop trying to become my best friend, I already have one. And thanks for the snow globe."

That’s all I said. Before she’d had time to take in what I’d said, I told the magic door my name and year and went to my room.

Before I go into that, I have to say, that door is really, really freaky. It’s completely black, with a black crystal ball in the middle, with a golden ring around, and an EYE in the middle, for crying out loud! An eye with a RED iris!

Anyway, my room’s really nice (we have our own bathroom!). Both mine and Jess’s beds are by the windows, and there’s a long table between the beds – each with a dresser at the foot of the bed – with two quills and ink bottles and foot tall stack of parchment.

Parchment, I tell you!

This place is really old-fashioned. The girls wear corselets with all their shirts instead of bras, and the boys mostly wear those weird tights and boots and white shirts with the puffy sleeves and waistcoats, except for us Earthlings. We wear normal clothes. I couldn’t believe it; it really is like a dream come true!

I still had three weeks to go before we started with lessons. I thought I would brighten the room – which was really lame, with mere beige walls and polished wooden floors – up a bit. I pasted all my favourite drawings about dragons and other magical creatures on my side of the walls. There was barely any room left on the wall when I’d finished putting up the pictures. That was a good thing.

Thereafter I replaced the bed covers with my own, a wolf howling at the moon, and a pillow cover with only the moon and a few stars on.

Then I put my toiletries in the bathroom and took a hot shower.

When I had finished I was so tired that I fell down on my new bed and took a nap.

I jerked awake in the middle of the night. The first thing I noticed was the quiet – there was no howling wind or snow flakes tapping against my window. It took a minute for me to realize I was not at Abbey Mount anymore, and I smiled to myself when I realized where I was. An actual magic school.
