Dear Diary,

Summer vacation starts in three days. For the first time in my life, I don’t want them to start. I need to get the Elders’ okay before I can start my journey across the world. Nicholas said they can’t be fooled. They can track someone easily, and then he went into some kind of science/magic mode and I really couldn’t understand a word he was saying.

I’d suggested making trouble to get their attention, but Nicholas refused to that. He said that would just reduce the chance of them letting me out of the school. I’d suggested going to Professor Darthorion, but Nicholas has such a big grudge against him that he refused to that, as well. He said we needed to wait until the eighteenth of March next year, and then he would come of his own accord. That would be when Johnny’s ten months are up. For now, I’ll just focus on my studies, and getting information on my father’s ring.

Oh, gotta go, I’m supposed to meet Johnny now.

I put the journal in the drawer and ran out of Felore’s office, shut the door quickly and dashed out of the restricted section and made for the library’s front door. However –

   "Young lady, get back here!"

It was the librarian. I pulled my face into the sweetest smile I could muster, and turned back. "Yes, ma’am?"

"Why are you running in the library?" she demanded. I sighed in relief.

"I’m in a hurry, ma’am, I’m sorry," I said. Before the librarian could say much more, I was out the door. I ran outside the castle to the lake, and sat down (out of breath) next to Johnny under a willow tree. There weren’t many people outside today – about fifty. I guessed the rest were packing.

"Where’ve you been?" Johnny asked.

"Library," I said, "Where’s Mekisha?"

"She doesn’t want to be a part of this," he said.

"What?" I asked, "Why?"

"She feels … intimidated by the thought of knowing so much of our secrets," he said, "She feels she’s protecting us by not knowing."

"That’s … really odd of her," I said, "So why’d you want to meet me?"

"I’ve solved another of my clues," he said, "You know, the stuff Grim left me. I wanted to know how you’re progressing."

"I’ve already gotten four … clues," I said, "I know where the rest are, but I need the okay of the Elders, so I’m going to wait until they come to visit you again."

"Where are they?"

"I can’t tell you," I said. It was strange for him to be this curious.

"Come on, Liz, we’re best friends," he pressed, "Besides, I’m also an heir. You can trust me."

"I know I can," I said, "But I literally can’t share anything with you. Besides, since when are you so curious? Why do you want to know?"

"It seems … interesting," he said, ignoring my first question.

"But you have your own interesting stuff to focus on. Are you all right?" I asked, "You seem … different."

"I – I just missed you," he said softly. Then he coughed, and I saw his hands beginning to tremble.

"Do you have a cold?" I asked, "Should I get you something?"

"No, I’m fine," he said, coughing worse. Then he stood up abruptly and started walking away, but I grabbed his arm.
