"How-"

"Huh uh," the pixie said, holding up her forefinger, "Pixie secret. Now, hand me to Gelvin and tell him my name."

I held my hand out for Peaseblossom to climb on my palm. When I turned around, I almost fell over again. None of the girls – or even the boys – paid any attention to their pixies, even though the little fairies were practically begging for attention. They stomped their tiny feet, punched the students with their tiny fists and some even shouted, but the students were oblivious. They were all gazing dreamily up at Professor Gildeneye. I stared at them, wide-eyed, and then glanced at Professor Gildeneye, who was sitting casually on his stone tablet, chatting with a bunch of pixies.

With a glance at Johnny, who was also wide-eyed, I walked across the clearing to where Professor Gildeneye sat. The pixies noticed me first, and their pretty faces contorted with irritation. They obviously thought I was trying to get attention, and I rolled my eyes.

"Her name’s Peaseblossom," I said simply.

Professor Gildeneye looked up and stared, obviously shocked, from me to Johnny to Peaseblossom and back again.

"Can we go now?" I continued, holding my hand out onto the stone tablet, where Peaseblossom carefully climbed from my hand. The other pixies seemed just as shocked as Professor Gildeneye. Peaseblossom began speaking in her own language, while he talked with me and Johnny in English.

"How were you able to complete the task?" he asked, having finally managed to hide his surprise.

"Err," I said, glancing at Johnny, "I recognized her from a while ago. She was given to me as a gift, but I set her free, so she told me her name, and here I am."

Professor Gildeneye’s expression did not change, and he said nothing. I forced a smile and turned to walk away, but he caught my arm, sending a strange sensation up my arm, and I pulled away, glaring at him.

"At least let me know your names," he said.

"Liz Davids-"

"Johnny Horn."

Johnny and I spoke at the same time, but somehow Professor Gildeneye caught both our names, "Liz and Johnny. Thank you. Your homework is a simple sketch of a pixie with subscripts. You may go."

We both kept quiet until we were almost at the front doors of the school.

"That was the weirdest lesson yet," Johnny said.

"I couldn’t agree more. What is up with him?"

"You heard what the pixie – Peaseblossom, was it? – told us. He’s a charmer. He’s used to having his way with most people, and the fact that we could resist him upset him," Johnny said.

"The question is, why could only the two of us think clearly?" I said.

"I’ll look it up tonight. I’m gonna do my homework in the library, and then research it. Care to join me?" Johnny asked.

I was about to agree when I heard it. A dramatic, sad kind of music, and it was coming from the music room. I sighed.

"I’m sorry, Johnny, but I – uh – I gotta do something first," I hoped that Johnny wasn’t so aware of the tense tone my voice had taken as I was.

"Sure, I’ll meet up with you in the common room, yeah?" he said, smiling. I nodded. He seemed in a hurry, so I was free to hurry to the music room.

When I entered, Nicholas’s music was very different from usual. It was so sad; I felt I would start crying. I waited patiently, however, for a few moments, until he finished. Then he just sat there, staring at the piano keys.
