“Shelby are you okay?” Skye’s mum asked. “Yeah I’m fine.” I weakly answered. “It’s hard isn’t it?” Skye comforted me. I just nodded. “Don’t think about it.” She told me. This is why she is my best friend. She knew exactly what I was thinking about. I just smiled before walking over to Danny tears already filling my eyes. Skye came over next to me and smiled. “It won’t be the same. He is fighter, so was Rose and Romeo. Everything will be fine. I promise.” Skye reassured me. “I hope so.” I barely whispered.

After spending two hours at the hospital Skye’s parents drove me home where I was greeted by Kyle’s dad. “Hello sweetie.” He smiled. “Hi?” I replied confused. “No offence or anything, but why are you here?” I questioned. “Your mum didn’t tell you?” He asked. I just looked at him confused. “Obviously not, well this is awkward.” He slowly said scratching the back of his neck. “I um… I’m moving in. So is Kyle.” Once again, he slowly said. “Oh yeah, mum told me. I just didn’t realise it was now.” I replied smiling. “She told me she told you this morning.”
“She might have, but I probably wasn’t listening, but hello anyway.” I smiled before walking upstairs to my bed room.

My bedroom was quiet large. I had purple and aqua walls decorated with posters of bands ad celebrities, a line of polaroid pictures of me and my friends. I had a walk in wardrobe and a king size bed. My curtains were purple with white splashes. My roof looked like the sky. It was light blue with white clouds. I had a cabinet under my T.V which is where I lined up some trophies, hats and beanies. My favourite thing about my bedroom is it’s just mine. I had a massive wall were I drew or painted on. It’s my canvas. It has everything I’ve drawn on it. And when it’s full, I paint over and start again. My bedroom was my safe place. I put my bag down before sitting on my bed and grabbing out my homework. I started writing down and solving some math equations before there was a knock at the door. I looked up to see Kyle’s smiling face. “Hey.” I smiled. “Hey, can I come in?” He questioned. I just nodded. “Wow, are these yours?” He gestured towards my paintings. I just nodded. “These are amazing.”
“Thank you.”
“So, why did you leave early today?” He asked before sitting down on my bed.
“You noticed?”
“Well no, but Stefan asked me what was wrong because you had an outburst.”
“Skye spoke to me.”
“Oh yeah. What was wrong with her this morning?”
“Well, where to start. She told me things. Things that made me feel really bad. Then I kind of exploded at Stefan before running.”
“And those things?”
“She told me that Danny, her brother, got in a serious accident and has been in a coma, and I was too happy with my life that I didn’t realise. She told me that all I talked about was Stefan lately I never asked her what was wrong.”
“Wow, that’s a little rude.”
“But it’s true. I didn’t ever bother asking her if she was okay. All I did was brag about how perfect my life is right now. Her brother is in hospital and I didn’t even know. I told Stefan, well yelled at Stefan, that he is the reason everything went wrong. I told him that he has changed me. I might have something else. But I don’t want to repeat it.”
“Please Shelbz, just tell me.”
“I told him… I told him that ever since he dragged mum out of bed she has been happy. And don’t get me wrong I want her to be happy, but that isn’t the problem. Ever since she met your dad, she hasn’t mentioned my dad. Have you noticed the lack of photos of him? There are none hanging anywhere accept my room. I like your dad, he makes mum happy, and that’s a good thing… but I just didn’t think she would forget about dad so fast.”
“I am not forgetting about your dad.” My mother interrupted. “I am sorry you feel that away. I only took down the pictures because it was hard turning every corner and seeing him. I love him more than I can love anyone else, but now I have a new man, and it’s hard trying to fall for him when your dad is everywhere.”
“But mum, that doesn’t mean you have to take down every photo.”
“I know, and I am sorry. I will put some of them back up.”
“Did they ever find out who the other driver was?” Kyle asked. I looked at mum. She looked down at her feet.
“Mum… did they?” I questioned.
“I think it’s time we have family talk.” She barely whispered. Kyle and I hopped off my bed before following mum down to the living room. She sat on a couch next to Kyle’s dad Adam. Kyle and I sat opposite to each other.

It was silent for a really long time before mum finally spoke. “Yes, they did find out who was driving the car.” She started, but then just stopped. “Mum!” I practically shouted. “Kyle, how did your mother die?” She questioned. “She got into a car accident.” He said so plainly. And that’s when it hit me. “No.” I whispered. “No, no it can’t be.” I yelled. “Mum this can’t be true.” I yelled once again. Kyle looked at me confused. “Kyle our parents both died from a car crash almost a year ago. The same day, April 30th, this isn’t a coincidence.” I informed me. “Shelby calm down.” My mum hushed. “How long have you known?” I asked her. “A bit over a month.” She looked down to the ground. “How could you not have told me? How could you not have told us?” I shouted once more. “Yes Kyle is my family, and so is Adam, but mum this is important and you didn’t tell me!” I kept shouting. Kyle grabbed my wrist. “NO! Leave me alone!” I snatched my wrist away before running upstairs to my bedroom. I slammed my door shut before lying on my bed balling my eyes out. My phone vibrated.
From Stefan:
Hey, are we talking?

I threw my phone onto the fall. I quickly made sure it didn’t smash before jumping back on my bed, still crying. After a little bit my phone vibrated again. This time I left it. There was a knock at the door. “Go away!” I shouted through the door. But whoever it was opened the door. I looked to see Skye standing there. She sat on the end of my bed. “Kyle called.” Was all she had to say before I started crying once again. She grabbed a hold of me and comforted me until I stopped.
“What are you madder about? Your mum didn’t tell you, or it was Kyle’s mum?” She asked. I didn’t have to think because I already knew my answer. “That my mum didn’t tell me. I honestly don’t care who the driver was. It just hurts that she didn’t tell me.” I sniffled. Skye hugged me once more. “I’ll be back.” She said before hopping off my bed, I was confused as to what she was doing. She came back moments later with three tubs of Baskin Robbins ice cream and a bunch of movies. “Why three ice creams?” I quizzed. “There is a third party.” She opened the door and Kyle walked in. “Is it okay-“He started before I interrupted by hugging him. “You are part of this too. Your dad didn’t tell you either.” I sniffled once again. He just smiled. Kyle grabbed the bean bags out of my cupboard and placed the on the floor. We watched movies all night. Half way through the movie Juliet and Carter came in with their bean bags and joined us. They fell asleep after the first movie and Skye drifted off after the third movie, but Kyle and I were still awake. “I am sorry.” He apologised.
“For what?”
“What my mum did. I know it was her fault, and I know you were in the car.”
“Kyle it’s okay, in some ways, I don’t care who the driver is, and I am just disappointed in my mother. But I do wish it wasn’t your mother who was driving. Because now we both lost the people who matter to us.”
“Yes but because of careless mistake, we have a new family, and I really like this family.” He smiled at me. I smiled back. “So tomorrow I am going to decorate my room, can I borrow your artistic skills?” He laughed. “Of course you can.” I giggled back. We watched one more movie before slowly falling asleep.
