Cosette rapped her knuckles against the opened door to Fred's office as she leaned against the doorframe. Fred looked up from his paperwork and smiled as soon as he locked eyes with her.
"I didn't think I'd be seeing you tonight," Fred told her as she stepped into the room. He turned in his chair and Cosette wasted no time in sitting in his lap with her legs draped over the arms of the chair. She lightly took hold of his chin and smiled before kissing him.
"Is that your way of asking me to leave?" Cosette asked as Fred reached over her legs to continue with the paperwork he was originally working on.
"I'd never ask you to leave, my love." Fred shook his head and Cosette dropped hers to rest on his shoulder. She glanced over his desk and quickly noticed that it was more cluttered than usual.
"What's all this?" She reached for a few files and flipped through them, but nothing on any of the pages meant anything to her.
"Well considering the fact that George hasn't stepped foot into the shop these last two days, I've had no choice but to pick up his slack," He sighed and leaned back into his chair, lazily running his hand along Cosette's leg.
"Damn," Cosette whispered under her breath, but she knew exactly why George was refusing to come down. It had been two days since she walked in on him and George fighting. Two days since he admitted to hating having her around the flat. Two days since she punched him.
"He'll come around," Fred assured her. "He probably needs another 24 hours and then this whole thing will blow over."
"Are you sure?" She asked. This behavior was very unlike George so there was no telling how long it would last. "Have you even talked to him?"
"He won't talk to me," He let out a faint breath of laughter. "He'll barely even look at me when he comes out of his room. I think he feels bad about it all."
"Good," Cosette rolled her eyes before looking down at the hand that she used to punch George in the jaw. "He's got a hard face, I could have broken a finger."
"Yeah, I don't think that's what he feels bad about," Fred chuckled, tilting his chin up to kiss her cheek. "Everything he said about you, Setty, he doesn't mean it. I know he doesn't. It's George."
It's George.
George was one of her best friends. She spent nearly as much time with him as she did with Fred. They had never gotten into a fight and even if they did have a disagreement, it never escalated to the point where she felt the need to physically hit him.
This sudden outburst had to have stemmed from something but it didn't seem like he was going to be talking to Fred about it anytime soon.
"Hey," Fred whispered, noticing how quiet she had gotten in a matter of seconds. "What's on your mind?"
"Do you think I should talk to him?" She asked, making Fred pause for a moment. He furrowed his eyebrows and clenched his jaw before blurting out an answer.
"I don't think that's smart, Setty."
"But it's me he's mad at," Cosette pointed out. "If he's got an issue with me, don't you think that we should work it out? I don't want him to feel like he has to walk on eggshells around us."
