CHAPTER EIGHTEEN | AMARA
"Earlier today, do you remember some of the stories we've read?" Ezra begins, as we walk through the hectic corridors.
I nod lightly at this, his hand grips mine firmly as he guides our path. "I do."
Once we reach my corridor the hallway is nearly empty except for a few maids and household staff. Ezra ushers us into my room and shuts the door behind us.
"Will you explain-," I began, when he snakes his open palm behind my head and pulls me into his chest. His other arm wraps around my waist and pulls me closer.
Although, it catches me by surprise I welcome the embrace and wrap my arms around his torso. He smells like the earth after fresh rain in the woods. He feels solid and reassuring, and I need that support right now..as much as I hate to admit it.
"You have no idea- how fucking upset I am about the fact that I couldn't put him out of his misery right then and there." He snarls, lowly. I look up at him at this, his eyes flashes red briefly but as his gaze rests on mine it cools back into a warm honey. Although the red swirls subtly in the background.
"I saw how close you were to doing so."
He nods, with almost an incredulous laugh before reaching for my injured hand. Gently, he grazes his thumb across the mark that Jace had left. A light shiver runs down my spine as, The dull pain leaves with it.
"Right, but with everything there is order- there are laws. In your world and ours. I'd rewrite it all if I could."
There's a pregnant pause between us, just standing in each other's space peacefully. His words sit on my heart, and I bite back the feeling.
"Will you tell me now, about what they were talking about?" I ask softly.
"Let's sit down first."
He grabs a seat on the cushioned chair on the side of my bed and I opt to take a seat on my bed. I raise my eyebrows and prompt him to continue but he doesn't. He just stares at me, eyes drifting from mine to the full expanse of my figure. Immediately, I feel heat rush to every inch of my skin.
"The heavens knew what they were doing when they gifted me with you."
There is barely a thread hanging between us and if he keeps this up I will snap it myself.
"Tell me now."
He smirks, jokingly grasping his heart in feigned wound. "Yes, forgive me for getting distracted, by my mate."
I feel my face flush, my ears are probably burning red at this point.
"When you and-- the alleged half-breed intertwined your blood, your eyes mirrored each other. Violet." His voice drops into a tone of seriousity.
I furrow my eyebrows at this, attempting to digest his words. "Like your.. Original?" The memory of the wolf's gaze in the book flashes in my head. It was an unsettling feeling, this feels equally unsettling.
"Yes, you and him share a connection with our original. We don't know how, or why he detects as a half breed and you as a human if that's the case. All we know is, we have to find out."
I sit with his words, sifting through it in every possible direction as to how this could be.
"I want to speak with him."
Ezra's eyes widen slightly, with furrowed brows. His lips part slightly, as if poised to speak, yet no words escape.
"You can't ask this of me." He says lowly, disbelief still lingering in his tone.
I stand from my seat at the bed, now between his legs from his position on the chair. My hands lock behind his neck, "Please let me, There are things only he knows." I plead. He brings his gaze up to meet mine, fingers tracing the back of my thighs.
He pauses, and tilts his head as if he were listening for something. A scowl pulls at his features, after a moment.
"What is it?"
He takes in a deep breath, "You just might get your wish."

We venture into a separate floor of the estate, almost as equally empty as mine. This is a juxtaposition in comparison to the prison I expected them to keep him in.
Two guards stood between a heavy oak doorway. They both nod as we approach.
"We've secured him, he appears to be in a docile state now." One of the guard's advises.
"Thank you, both."
Ezra reaches for the door knob, and pushes it open. My breath catches in my throat at the thought of what we're getting ourselves into.
A majestic four-poster bed takes center stage, its towering canopy adorned with billowing curtains of silk and satin, cascading down like a waterfall of opulence. At the heart of the room, a roaring fireplace crackles with warmth, its mantle adorned with family crests. Plush rugs and tapestries line the marble floors, their intricate patterns adding texture and depth to the space.
Jace sits in the middle, with his back turned to us in contrast to the opulence. A large wolf tattoo covers the expanse of his back. The eyes almost identical to the book.
The tattoo itself sends shivers down my spine.
"You here to kill me? I know your boyfriend is dying to." Came a sarcastic tone. He gets to his feet, with the sound of a metallic ring following. as he turns to us my eyes fall onto the chain that bound his hands together in front of him.
"I thought to accompany her, as it seems every encounter you two have ends near death." Ezra bites back, taking a step forward but bring my arm up across his torso to stop him.
"Let us talk." I remind him, lowly.
Ezra bites back the irritation that seems tangible at this point and goes to sit at one of the seats to the side of the room. His gaze also feels palpable, in Jace's direction.
"Have you always known?" I ask, with a slight tremble to my voice.
"When you came to Mountain View, something felt different. I didn't know it was you until-," He pauses, and clears his throat in discomfort.
"Right." I say softly, crossing my arms over my chest.
He shakes his head, resting his gaze at my recoiling figure. "I didn't mean to—those Wendigos—," he mutters with irritation, voice trailing off as frustration crept into his tone.
