CHAPTER FOUR | AMARA POV

That feeling.

As if your heart is slipping out of your chest while you fall backward off of a cliff.

That's the best way to describe how I feel now.

I stumbled out of the first exit I could find in that maze of a restaurant. Then welcome the cool night air that nipped my skin. I take a deep inhale, clutching my chest in an attempt to calm my rapid breathing.

That can't be the man who has been haunting my dreams.

I lean back onto the brick wall, thankful to be away from the vigorous energy of the entrance. A few meters away stood a forest line, the whistling amongst the trees made it feel more ominous than it should be. I wrap my arms over my chest for more warmth.

It's been a long day, I reason internally. Trying to make sense of the mess today is. I need to go home and rest.

I'll just text an apology to Jace-,

The creaking sound of a door swinging open steals my attention.

His eyes fall onto me almost immediately upon exiting. His brows drew together in worry, "I feel like I've asked you this more than you'd like today. But are you okay?" Jace closes the door from behind him and goes to stand before me.

I give a small smile as a feeble attempt to lighten the mood, which felt to be a futile effort. "I was about to text you-- I'm sorry for all of this."

He shakes his head, "It's okay, things happen."

We stood in comfortable silence, for what seemed to be a while. With just the sound of the breeze swaying through the trees, to accompany us.

"If you don't mind me asking, what brought you to Mountain View?"

I lift my gaze to meet his at this, "I just needed to get away from home. To breathe."

His eyebrows furrow at this, "Were they abusive?"

I let out a dry laugh as his words simmer in my head. I can't exactly unpack my baggage now. I just got here to run away from it.

"No, I just have an overbearing mom and an equally suffocating older sister."

For a second, he held my gaze before he pulls away to look tensely towards the door that we exited.

"I know we've just met, but can you trust me for a second?" He asks, distractedly before turning back to me.

I furrow my eyebrows together at this, and part my lips to respond when he pulls me tightly to his chest. His arms wrapped around me, hands pressed tightly against my back.
