CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN | AURA
AMARA POV
He knows we're here.
How do you know that? I ask but my head is spinning. Have these creatures always been living so close to us? Have we been intertwined earlier in my life than I thought?
Wendigos can sense heat within a certain radius. Undoubtedly, we're as clear as day to him.
Ezra looks down onto his hands, claws protrude out of his previously human nails. I look up to his eyes, with my hands gripping his shoulders tightly. His eyes flash a shade of ember.
"I saw the lights turn on, Griffin. Do not call me crazy right now." Aura, voices with annoyance.
Griffin sighs at this, I hear footsteps head closer to the door of the closet. "You're not crazy angel. If there were monsters in the closet, I would know." He laughs, lowly with a light knock on the door.
My breath catches in my throat.
He's toying with us. Ezra scoffs in annoyance, I could kill him for fun.
Please don't- I plead attempting to bring him back to earth.
"Stop playing around," Aura groans, "I'm exhausted, let's just go back to the hotel."
There's a pause at this.
"Okay, I was kidding. Let's head back then." Griffin agrees.
Their footsteps become more distant from our position.
"I just don't know why she would go MIA on me, she at least would respond to me." Aura's desolate voice resounds now distantly from the hallway.
My heart pangs at this. Home wasn't the healthiest place, but Aura did the best she could to shield me from things.
The sound of the front door clicking closed has me moving from our position.
Give it a moment. Ezra says, his words leaking with authority. It's not like I could escape from this vice grip.
They're gone now. At this point I think you're making an excuse for us to be this close.
I see the corner of his lips twitch into a small smirk.
I'm not one to miss an opportunity, Amara. But I wanted to ensure they're a safe distance away.
I feel his gaze looking down onto me. My body is undoubtedly still in his arms.
"Are you okay?" He asks, inversely.
I suck in a breath and shake my head. "I haven't seen my sister in weeks. Now I find her long term boyfriend isn't human?"
"I know it's a lot to take in, we're working to find the answers." He reassures and wraps his arms around my waist. I feel his chin rest on the top of my head, and I press my cheek against his chest for comfort. The steady beat of his heart evokes a sense of calm within me.
"Okay." Is the only word that I could find.
He opens the door to the closet, letting in the fresh air. I waste no time stepping out to gather air and my thoughts.
I take in my studio once again, the quaint beginnings I was looking forward to.
"We need to go," He advises, lowly. Breaking my moment of reminisce.
Wordlessly, I go towards the books I've haphazardly left on my book nook. His hand finds mine, and stops me in my tracks.
"Leave them, I'll buy you more."
"With your taste in books? I'll pass."
His eyes narrow in annoyance, although I don't know if it's the trick of the light but his eyes looked to flash briefly with humor.
He doesn't give me a moment to break free from his grasp. In a swift motion, he stoops low, wraps an arm around my waist and throws me over his shoulder.
I let out a startled gasp.
"You don't make anything easy for me." He sighs. I watch helplessly as my belongings become farther and farther from my reach.
We exit my studio, being sure to close the door behind us, he treads swiftly down the hall- opposite of the elevators and instead towards the stairs.
"I can walk." I yelp in discomfort, this is proven to be in vain. He proceeds to ignore me, and continues to tread down the stairwell.
"Any reason why we're taking the very uncomfortable route in this position AKA the stairs?" Undoubtedly my voice is dripping with annoyance.
"We have to be quick, we don't know who he could've alerted."
I swallow my complaints at his words. I'm just grateful that I don't live too high up.
Archibald. Ezra links. He doesn't break his stride, not even when we exit the stairway and onto the open sidewalk.
"To be young and in love!" I glance at the older couple who watch us with fondness. I can imagine how ridiculous we appear.
If they only knew.
"I'm not getting a response from him." There's wariness in his tone. At this, he pauses to survey our surroundings. I tap on his lower back, "You can put me down now."
Surprisingly, he does. I take a moment to straighten out my back after being in that position for too long.
I turn and follow his gaze at the lone limousine the street over. Something about it has the hair on my arms prickling up.
Ezra seems to share the same feeling, but despite it he begins to make his way towards it- of course with our hands interlocked and me in tow.
There is something wrong. I link.
Even in our link he's radio silent. He may be blocking me out mentally.
We approach the car much to my dismay. My ears are ringing at this point. There's a silence, as if even nature itself was afraid to speak.
I don't sense anything. He links, his tone is monotonous.
He runs straight towards the driver's side, and pulls the door open.
I with hold the scream attempting to claw its way out of my throat as a body falls limply onto the gravel ground with a thud.
Archibald.
