CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE | AMARA POV

Mark me?

"What does that entail?" I mutter, breathlessly. Ezra pauses from his gentle assaults on my neck.

"It means that on this spot," He taps at the point where my neck meets my shoulder, this illicits a shiver from my end, "I will mark you. Then we will complete our bond afterwards." His golden eyes swirls in color with a blazing ember, the color of which I remember from the night that we initially had crossed paths. It now feels like centuries ago.

"Why is it necessary?" I almost expect impatience from him, maybe even a hint of irritation but instead I'm met with the opposite. He looks to me in thought, as if he were attempting to sift through for the right words.

"In our world, we know and feel that our mate is missing once we have completed our first shift. The emptiness carries weight in our everyday lives. The Moon chooses our mate to complete us and they are our better half. What I lack, you carry and vice versa."

I sit in silence, taking in his explanation.

"Once we are bonded, the connection is only breakable through death. We will feel each other's pain, we can mindlink and feel each other's emotion regardless of where we are. My energy, my everything, I could give to you if you needed it."

His fingers trail across my skin softly, over my jawbone and up the pad of my cheek. My blood hums in my veins with anticipation.

My heart pounds, so loud that I'm sure he can hear it. When he touches me, it feels like there's a live wire between us- this must be the connection he's talking about.

A connection that I've been trying to ignore.

But I can't deny, even the smallest touch feel euphoric.

You're killing me.

Ezra's hungry plea enters my mind.

How so?

You'd be the death of me, I'm wrapped around your finger.

Came his response.

With a small smile I gently take his hand in mine, interlocking our digits.

He watches me as I bring my face closer to his, until I can feel his breath fanning my own.

Let me go at my pace.

He gives me a light nod, the intensity in his gaze is enough to make me lose my senses.

He's so handsome.

My eyes fall from his eyes, his nose, blood red cupids bow lips, sharp jaw-

His lips tilt into a smirk.

Thank you, and you're beautiful. His words interrupt my internal observation. Immediately, I feel my face flush.

The ground can swallow me whole now and I'd gladly accept that fate.

"Aw, you're blushing." He laughs, opting for a light pinch on my cheek.

I pull back slightly at this, hiding the pout that attempts to make it's appearance. "Can you get out of my head?" I sigh, in exasperation.

He shakes his head at this, "Can't- it's too fun." He jokes, with a light chuckle.

He observes my sullen expression, with an amused look."I also really can't, It's part of our bond. However, I can teach you how to block your thoughts from anyone."

"How?"

"I promise, I will teach you." He hums, "but we have unfinished business."

I purse my lips together, his lips look all too inviting right now. We've kissed before, but why do I feel nervous all over again.

Before I have the chance to change my mind, I lean forward slightly, brushing his lips with mine. The sparks erupt within my veins, it's euphoric. Slowly, his lips start to move with mine. I graze my hands over his abdomen and onto his chest. This sends the kiss into a sense of urgency. He gently grazes my bottom lip with his teeth before sliding his tongue into my mouth. I move my hands upwards until it rakes through his hair to pull him impossibly closer. His open palms wrap around the expanse of my back, mirroring the hunger. A light growl erupts from his chest, as our tongues fight for dominance.

I never knew what it was to want someone until Ezra.

A practical stranger.

But why does his lips feel like I've known it for a lifetime?

He gently pushes me onto the bed, back first without breaking the kiss. Our hands, exploring the expanse of each other. In the midst of the chaos, my hand grazes his clothed member.

I pull away from the kiss in surprise. He groans at this, "You have no idea what I want to do to you right now."

My throat dries at the thought, my everything feels hypersensitive but despite myself, "I'm not ready."

He nods, "I would never want to push you to do anything you're not ready for. The act of completing a bond is special for Lycans also. Similar to marriage for humans. To signify the recognition of your life long partner."

Ezra's hand finds it's way to my stomach and brings his lips back down to mine, molding it into a deep kiss, "That being said, I will not be completing our bond." He advises lowly, trailing his hand higher up my stomach; and pushes the fabric of my shirt farther up in the process.

"I just need to feed this hunger."

Ezra brings himself up, hovering over my body and rests his forehead against mine. I try to decipher what happened. All the energy I earlier had, deteriorated quickly. I try to fight the heaviness on my eyelids, but I feel safe, I feel warm.

Why fight it anymore?

EZRA POV

She sleeps soundly beside me. I observe her features, brushing a strand away from her cheek.

Being mated with a human is unheard of and the unknown terrifies me. I'm taking everyday with as much patience as I can gather. As long as she is here with me, then it will be worth it. Eventually this will all be a distant memory.

Amara

A voice calls. I furrow my eyebrows, stroking my thumb gently on her cheek.

Amara, can you hear me?

Her eyes are closed, but they race with the words. Her eyebrows tighten at this.

I clench my teeth. My wolf roars with anger internally and I attempt to with hold it.

He's mind linking her, but how? How is his connection as strong after only a day of training?

I move my hand from her cheek onto the small of her back, rubbing small circles to help soothe her.

I close my eyes, channeling my focus into her mind's eye. His words echoes distantly in the background, but I lift a mind block.

At least I can grant her this peace.

I'll deal with him later.
