A few hours later, I here a knock on the door. Must be my dinner.
Opening it I see a woman in a Nutrition Distribution (ND) uniform. Taking the foil ware container with a smile, I thank her and shut the door.
Eating whatever was in that, I throw it down a chute that leads to the main incinerator.
"Lights out" comes a message through the intercom and all the lights shut off. They will be reactivated tomorrow at 10 am. These lights are solar powered as fossil fuels are still inaccessible. Although fuel like coal, its youngest version, peat, is being cultivated and used, we still have to save electricity.
Changing my clothes in only the light of my transpod, I crawl into bed and fall asleep, still hearing Koby tell me that I got the job I wanted. A smile plays on my lips as I fall into a slumber.
----------------------------------------------
The next week comes in the blink of an eye. I put on the formal suit, and type in the code which I copy from a program from my pod.
'009469'
Brushing out my hair and then tying it into a ponytail, I head out. I meet M at the Tram point, the place where we board it.
"Hey." He says, briefly looking at me.
"Hi." I reply, flustered. I recheck the letter that had been sent. It clearly told me that I will be working at Rosewood Complex, which was luckily the same one as M. I didn't tell him though, because I wanted to see his reaction when we got off at the same point.
We got in together and sat near the window. The whole time I studied notes not to show any emotion. When Rosewood Avenue was around the corner, M stood up, and I did too. I was careful to stand behind him.
Along with us, another newbie, like me had been transferred here. She had glasses and mousey brown hair. But her smile made her look beautifully enthusiastic.
M suddenly turned around and asked with a smug smile, "So, are you happy to be working with me? Well, you should be."
My mouth was agape. "How in the world did you know? I didn't even tell you!!" I say.
"I know everything, Selena. Everything." He says, and ruffles my hair. This pisses me off even more.
"Ugh, why are we even friends?" I ask and stomp away. I find myself next to the new girl. We have to walk a bit before we get to the office, so I deside to start a conversation.
"Hey. So you just got recruited at this month's Job Ceremony, right?" I ask her.
"Yeah. You too, right? I think I saw you there." She says with a nervous giggle.
"Selena." I say, and stick out my hand.
"Andrea." She says and shakes it.
"Nice name. Did you choose this job or...?"
"Oh yes, I chose it."
"Cool."
"Hopefully the CEO is good. I swear, if it's someone I know I'm gonna kill him or her."
I laugh. "I just hope it's not a slave driver."
I walk into the building, chatting with Andrea and we head to the reception. M taps me on the shoulder. "I'll be in my workspace."
I wave him off. "Okay."
The receptionist, who was attending a call on her pod, finally looks up at us.
"What can I do for you?" she asks with a smile.
"Umm, we're new, our job ceremony was last week." I explain. Andrea nods her head. "Me too."
Checking her computer screen, she nods.
The thing is that computers are used at work as the pods are too small. It's just more convenient.
"Oh yes. Miss Razia and Miss Brokovich. The new arrivals."
We nod again.
"Okay, may I have your PID's? One at a time. "
Rolling my eyes at this, I switch on the pod and show her my ID. They're just identification cards, but officials and receptionists call them Pod ID's. Lame idea if you ask me.
She transfers some data and a pattern appears at the bottom.
"That's used to track when you come and when you go."
I fidget with the pouch as Andrea gets her's done. I need to know who's the CEO of this place. I feel nervous and I think my heart drops to my stomach when I hear the receptionist give directions to their office. I really really REALLY hope that I get a decent one. Preferably someone I don't know. It probably will be, because they usually take people with experience.
The problem with a bad CEO is the fact that you'll be put into bad positions. And that's something I do NOT want to be stuck with.
Andrea and I would have joked about it, but I felt really nervous.
Entering in, I see a guy with slicked back hair looking out of the French windows. Okay, a guy. Hopefully not temperamental.
He turns around and I think of all the profanities I can.
Internally groaning, I manage to keep a smile.
But in front of me stood the most annoying man in the universe.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Kinate Nashig.
----------------------------------------------
I am writing this on 12% battery 😂
So, CHAPTER 4
That was kinda cliffhanger-y. Like, who's this? Why does Selena think he's annoying? Read on to find out!!!
