Recap:
"I was called by Kinate because there was a virus in his computer." He says nervously.
"Okay," I say, confused.
"So I was going through some of the files and I found one with no name. It wasn't the one with the virus, but I found what was inside that file."
"What was it?"
"I had burned it to a data drive." He says and hands me it.
"Okay, but what was it?"
He takes a deep breath.
"They're your memories, Selena. The lost memories of your 13th year."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I stared at him with my mouth agape. "No. No, they can't be."
He hunched his shoulders. "Got a bit of a surprise for you. They are."
"Are you serious? Please tell me this is all some kind of joke that will end up with paint on my face or something!"
That actually happened once. Long story.
"I wish!" he said. "So in this file, along with the coding was a scanned copy of a letter. Kinate was out this ENTIRE time, so I transferred that to my pod. I'll read you a part of it..."
He takes out his pod, and begins to read.
"'....... so yeah, these are Selena Razia's memories. I've saved them in a data drive, which you probably have with you right now. You do understand that by accepting the contract, you take full responsibility of this data. Thanks to your help, we have the ability to record and store memories...... Of course, you do understand that you will have to keep these safe for the rest of your life, until needed. You may only be 15, but we all know what it contains. Good luck.
Dameon Brown.'"
I begin to feel light headed. "So it's not a joke."
"I don't know, Selena. But I felt you must know about it. It's your choice- you can destroy it, or take it."
"Is there still a copy with Kinate?"
"Yeah. He'd be suspicious if it went missing."
"And we both know now that he isn't as great as we think he is." I say bitterly, leaning back.
"They might be good memories, Selena. Heck, they might be great." he says desperately.
"But then why would Kinate have them?" I asked, in a strained voice. It was so unfair. The minute I started trusting him, this showed up. I mean, I hoped he had changed, maybe seen the error of his ways.
He was probably the same conceited piece of shit.
"What if I want to know what they are?" I ask softly.
"This is the complicated part. If you don't already know, this office has a storage room with a computer connected to a brain-machine, er, I mean Memory Transfer Hub. It's basically a machine that can undo the effects of Isosceptin, and, if we plug it in correctly, with the data drive, could probably restore your memories. It's not that hard, actually. It will just make nerve cells with lost connections start firing again."
