chapter 1 | rich people
❦
OUR STORY BEGINS HERE, as young Olivia Jones strolled towards the Alvarez apartment, smoothing her red hair before knocking on the door.
Olivia had never been a fan of her fiery red hair. Some kids teased her, saying it looked like the color of blood, and she often wished she had a different shade of colour on her hair.
The door swung open revealing her best friend, Alex Alvarez. He smiled widely at the sight of her and pulled her into a hug.
"Livi, you came!" Alex pulled away from the hug as she giggled. "Of course I did, silly." The two chuckled before walking back into the apartment. The kitchen was buzzing with Elena and Lydia chatting with Penelope, who was trying convince them of something.
"She has to have a quinces! How else will we know the day that our little girl becomes a woman?" Lydia exclaimed dramatically.
"You missed it. I was 12, I was in the gym and ironically happened in first period." Elena smirked. Olivia laughed at the disappointed face on Lydia.
Seeing that they hadn't noticed her, Olivia plopped down onto the couch next to Alex. He had his headphones on, nodding to the music while she leaned on his shoulder, playing with his fingers, completely ignoring the chaos in the kitchen.
Lydia sauntered over to Alex, taking his headphones off his head. They exchanged a quick convo in spanish, and Olivia raised a brow in confusion.
"Don't worry I'll teach you Spanish some time." He said with a grin.
"Abuelita...I'll learn more Spanish when you learn more English." Elena teased. Olivia stifled a laugh with her hand.
"I know the English! Besides your abuelo, god rest his soul, did not marry me for my mind." Lydia shot back. Elena rolled her eyes and made a beeline for her room.
"Who do you think you're insulting?" Penelope questioned Lydia. Alex took his head off of Olivia's shoulder and looked at his mother.
"Good one mom. By the way, what are the last sixteen digits of your credit card?" Alex casually asked.
"Wow, so smart." She teased. "I know." Alex winked causing her to roll her eyes at his cockiness.
"Uh, what are you doing? Are you shopping? Cause' who said you could shop?" Penelope scoffed.
"oh and hi sweetie, i didn't see you there." Penelope pinched her cheek, making her giggle. Olivia often goes to the Alvarez apartment whenever her parents were working. Especially since their apartments were literally next to each other, she just goes whenever she likes.
"You said I could order sneakers for school." Alex crossed his arms dramatically . "Five pairs?" Penelope scoffed.
"Monday through Friday! Don't worry I don't need weekend sneakers." Alex replied and Penelope laughed.
"Oh, well I can't have my son walking around in Monday sneakers on a Saturday. Somebody might call child services." she jokes making Olivia chuckle.
"Mom I'm serious. I'm in middle school now, how I look, kind of matters." Alex complained.
"Okay, so you can buy one pair for under forty-dollars." Penelope told Alex.
"Forty?" Alex gasped dramatically, his hand on his chest like it was the end of the world.
"Oh! I saw some sneakers online that were only 20 dollars." Olivia said from the couch as Alex turned to her with wide eyes.
"20 dollars?! Who are you Livi?!" Alex gasped once again. "Yeah Livi is right. And a pair of sneakers can last you the whole year." Penelope said.
"The whole year?! Okay mom, I know we're not rich, but are we poor?" Alex exclaimed.
"Seriously Alex?" Olivia raised her brows.
"No. We're...fine." Penelope stammered.
"That sounds like poor." Alex complained.
"We have a fridge!" She shot back.
"You never let us turn it on!" He huffed.
At that point, Olivia decided to zone out. She scrolled through Alex's laptop, trying to drown out the banter.
"Livi let's go to my room." Alex said as he took off the headphones on her head and pulled her to his room.
"so, are you gonna buy the $20 sneaker?" Olivia asked, flopping on his bed.
"No, but I have a plan." Alex smirked.
"Okay...anyways I have to go. My mom is gonna kill me if I don't go back soon." Olivia huffed.
"Alright bye Livi." Alex went over and hugged her as he kissed her on the forehead which made her giggle.
"love you." He smiled widely at her.
"love you too, goofball." Olivia smiled before walking out of his room with a huge smile on her face.
As she walked out, Lydia caught her. "hey pelliroja! what's with the smile?" Lydia smirked at the redhead.
"It's nothing...just stuff." Olivia chuckled, brushing it off.
"alright, bye." Lydia waved at her.
And just like that, she left the apartment, still a smile on her face. Children's love, am i right?
