The bar was weirdly crowded for a weekday afternoon, but I thought none of it as Ren and I squeezed to the front.
I rested my elbows on the bar and smiled at the bartender, Finn, with who I had become quite acquainted in my time in New York. "Hey, Finn," I greeted, and he smiled back at me, his toothy grin a welcoming sight.
"Afternoon, my dear. Where's Ren?" He inquired and then smiled at the sight of the fiery redhead coming up to the counter.
"Ciao," she greeted and fist-bumped him, jumping onto one of the bar chairs and pulling the front of her green dress down slightly.
Green. That was a color I had not worn in a long time. It reminded me too much of Santa Monica, of the crash, of him, of Lana, of my mom and dad, of every bad and good day. The color brought back every memory I had worked so hard to push away, so I stayed away from it.
I did miss my hair, but when Ren helped me dye it brown she said that hair is energy, and sometimes you need to get rid of bad energy. My green hair would send me into breakdowns nearly every night when I had nightmares of the crash, so Tyler bought some dye and Ren helped me.
"Mojito," I told Finn, who was in the middle of pouring shots for Ren.
He smirked and held his hand out. "ID?"
"Ha-ha, funny," I said, straight-faced, and he rolled his eyes and after sliding the shots to Ren, began to mix my drink.
"Why are y'all out of work early, don't tell me Eli the Great let you out," Finn conversed, his eyes twinkling.
"Of course not," Ren scoffed, and then downed a shot, making a face. "We did our work, and he does not check if we are in our office for the next few hours, so we'll just sneak back in."
"He doesn't check?"
I laughed. "No, he is usually too busy banging his secretary to do anything else."
Finn widened his eyes and then shrugged and pumped his fist in the air. "Respect the game."
I thanked him for the mojito, and sipped at it, frowning when I realized he had put mint in it. "You put mint in it."
He nodded slowly. "Yup... Because there is mint in a mojito."
"You know I do not like mint."
"I know you don't like a lot of things, El, but as a bartender, it is sacrilege to purposefully not put a key ingredient in a drink."
"The customer is always right," I argued.
Ren stuck her head into our conversation, her eyes already drooping due to her insane light-weight tendencies. She lifted her finger. "That is a problematic statement."
I nodded reluctantly. "You're right, but, I do not like mint."
Finn shrugged. "No can do."
I pushed aside the mojito and waved my hand in front of me. "I'll just have what Ren's having then."
Finn smirked and filled up a shot cup, sliding it to me with a smug grin on his face.
I took the shot and winced, then made a face at Finn. "Fuck you."
I continued taking shots, ignoring the burn of the alcohol and the progressing spinning of my head. Every shot I took put another curtain over memories, and there was nothing I loved more than forgetting.
