Ren was soaking up the drama of my life eagerly, her brown eyes wide as she relished in my troubles.

She was laughing, covering her mouth with her hand in near shock. "You're kidding."

I shook my head and tsked. "No."

"Oh my god." She leaned forward, the movement slightly crumpling the many papers splayed out before her. "I mean, he sounds hot, but girl... A little crazy..."

I huffed. "A little?" I sighed, regretting my words. "He isn't crazy... He's just... Passionate."

Ren laughed. "Passionate my ass, that man is obsessed with you. I mean, I get why, but now you're making me want to meet him."

I shook my head quickly. "Uh-uh. Not gonna happen. I have to keep things between me and Tyler sane. Comfortable. Stable. I need to get Stone out of my life A-S-A-P so that I can just settle down and live the trophy wife life."

"Sounds like you're avoiding the inevitable. By the sound of it, that man will do anything to be with you." She sighed theatrically. "Ah, the dream."

I began opening emails slowly and methodically, the repetitive task exhausting me. "You have a girl," I reminded her. Somehow, despite the insane stability of Ren's relationship, she always spoke like she was single, sad, and lonely. It was like whenever Maliwan wasn't there she became a depressed spinster.

I groaned at the name Anna Hargreen appearing on my screen and opened the email reluctantly.

Hello, it is Malia Smith, agent of Anna Hargreen, the writer of The Raven.

I'm writing to inform you that we are contemplating ending our contract with Huang Publishing and Co. We were offered a deal double that of yours, and unless we are matched we will be signing off.

Call 917-334-3322 to discuss any problems.

Thank you,

Malia Smith.

I frowned and forwarded the email to Eli, quickly standing up and leaving my desk. I motioned to Ren that I was leaving, and then exited the room quickly, hoping to catch Eli before he opened the cursed email.

I knocked on his door tentatively and then entered at his bidding. He was seated in his large chair talking to someone on the phone rather harshly, and he motioned to me to take a seat.

When he finally ended his call, he glanced at me. "What is it?"

I cleared my throat and hid my fiddling fingers in my lap. "Well, uh, I received an email from Malia Smith, Anna Hargreen's agent, and they are looking to end our contract."

Eli leaned back. "Why?"

"Offer was doubled."

He stayed silent for a few moments and I crossed my fingers hoping I would get lucky and he would not get angry. But, as evidence of the past few years of my life showed, I was not a lucky person.

"Are you serious?"

I nodded.

He started shaking his head. "See, see this is why I told you, I told you, to get those papers out and ready by last week. If you had done that, then maybe, maybe, we wouldn't be losing such a fucking important client. Do you realize what the fuck you have done?"
